World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
Roslyn Castle was a Merchant ship
I went to sea in the british merchant navy at the age of 17 in 1941 as a galley boy on a ship called the Roslyn castle. I was in most of the theatres of war, mostly on troop ships. I have documented all my exsperences for my family in a book form . I am now eighty years of age and still fit enough to enjoy life. This piece of literature came to my notice many years ago, I think it describes a British seaman of the war years I hope you enjoy it
THE SEAMAN.
Between the innocence of infancy and the recklessness of adultery comes that unique specimen of humanity known as a seaman . seaman can be found in bars,in arguments, in bed, in dept and in-toxicated. They are tall, short, fat, thin, fair, but never normal. They dislike ships food, chief engineers, writing letters, sailing on saturdays, and dry ships. They like receiving mail, paying off day, nude pin ups, sympathy, complaining and beer. A seamans secret aambition is to change places with the owner for just one trip, to own a brewery and to be loved by every one in the world. A seaman is a Sir Galahad in a japanese brothel a psychoanalyst with ; Readers Digest; on the table, Don Quixote with a discharge book, the saviour of mankind with his back teeth awash, Valantino with a fiver in his pocket and Democracy personified in a red chinese prison cell. A Seaman is a provider in war and a parasite in peace. No one is subject to so much abuse, wrongy accused, so often misunderstood by so many as a seaman. He has the patience of Job, the honesty of a fool and the heaven sent ability to laugh at himself. When he returns home from a long voyage no one else but a seaman can create such an atmosphere of suspence and longing as he walks through the door with the magic words on his lips; Have you got the beer in yet,,,,,,,,,
