World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
HMS Mauritius (c80) was a Crown Colony Class Cruiser (also called Figi Light Cruisers). She had a crew of 730 men. She was built by Swan Hunter at Wallsend and was launched on the 19th July 1939.
She saw action in the Atlantic 1941, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Mediterranean 1943-44, Anzio 1944, Normandy 1944, Biscay 1944, Norway 1945
The Mauritius was transered to the reserve in 1953 and was broken up by Wards at Inverkeithing in 1965.
My Great Uncle, James McAllister, from Scotland, died recently at the age of 91. He was born in Johnstone, near Paisley, in 1916, but spent most of his life in Corby, Northamptonshire. We were told at his funeral in Kettering, Northamptonshire, that he served on the ship, HMS Mauritius, during the Second World War. He left with the rank of, ¨Sergeant At Arms¨. Does anyone have any further information or pictures? Many thanks
I served aboard HMS Mauritius from December 1940 until May 1944. Before we paid off all crew members were given the option of purchasing a book covering the history of the ship during that period. Unfortunately my copy inadvertentley was destroyed and I would dearly love to find out if it was possible to obtain another copy. Can anyone give me any information.
