World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
HMS Lapwing was built by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering at Greenock, Scotland. She was launched on the 16th of July 1943. HMS Lapwing was torpedoed by U-968 and sunk off Northern Russia north of Murmansk on the 20th of March 1945 with the loss of 158 lives. 61 men were rescued.
HMS Lapwing. Torpedeod 20th March 1945, Convoy JW65, off the Kola Inlet, Northern Russia. The "Lapwing" was actually hit amidships at 10.58hrs GMT and NOT later as often stated. She sunk some 12 minutes later at 11.10hrs GMT. This has now been confirmed by many surviving crew members with whom I am in regular contact. The error is due to certain crew members setting their time onto a different time scale. These chaps (on board Lapwing on that voyage) approx 20/21 in number, although not confirmed or denied by the Admiralty, were from a special Anti-Sub group.
