World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

HMS Volcano was a Royal Navy land base at Holmrook Hall, Cumbria during the Second World War. It was the home of the bomb and munitions training school between 1943 and 1946. Its primary purpose was to teach munitions and explosive demolition, to Royal Navy personell and to special forces including many Norwegians.

It was a top sectret establishment and the locals were told that the hall had been requisitioned as a recuperation hospital for those who had suffered shipwrecks.

After the war the hall fell into dereliction and was soon demolished. Today the former stables block has been converted to housing and is set in the hall's grounds between lying and the River Irt and the A595.
