World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

Auxiliary Units were created in 1940, made up of men specially selected from retired soldiers, Radio Amateurs and the Home Guard they were sworn to secrecy and equipped and trained separately. Hidden bunkers were constructed across Britain. The bunkers were located in remote often wooded areas and were designed for the unit to go to ground, at the approach of the invaders. The bunkers were equipped with emergency food and water reserves, heated by kerosene lamps they were fitted with beds and toilet facilities, to be self suffcient. They had escape tunnels which exited some distance from the bunker.

The men of the Auxiliary Units would have used their local knowledge to begin a campaign of harassment and destruction once the enemy had taken over the area.

If you or any members of of your family, were a member of an Auxiliary Unit we would love to here from you.

I live in Wickham Market, Suffolk and although born after the war I have memories of the local men who were formed and trained as an Auxilary Unit. There is a museum which can be viewed at www.parhamairfieldmuseum.co.uk During the war the airfield was also known as Framlingham Field and housed the USAAF. There are still buildings around, many of which I have been in as a boy.

My Grandfather, Leslie Bulley and Uncle Charles Bulley were members of Jonah Patrol based in Newport which was then in Monmouthshire. Sadly, both are now deceased. My Grandfather rarely spoke of Jonah Patrol and his wife (My Grandmother) never knew his was in the British Resistance. She died in 1985 none the wiser. Jonah Patrol used 2 OB's in Wentwood forest and there was a third used for ammunition. I have located 2 of the bunkers but am still looking for the 3rd. The 1 bunker has suffered a partial collapse s I am working towards getting them preserved. In order to present a good case to Cadw I have to present a detailed history of the Auxiliary Units and Jonah Patrol.

I have spoken to the wonderful David Warwicker and have purchased his book. I have a few photos, a BBC Wales recording of an interview with my Grandfather and the Sergeant of the Patrol Alan Hollingdale. I also have a few newspaper cuttings and a journal he kept of the movements at Abernant Scout Hut. The Scout Hut was the early meeting place before the bunkers were completed.

I would be very grateful if you could supply me with any information you can on this patrol if you have it. Here are the names that were given to me by David:

  • Alan Hollingdale was Sergeant and he died in 2001
  • H Charles Lawrence, (Gun Licence holder) Lulworth House, Caerleon Village, Newport, Mon
  • R Skinner, Dracullwin Farm, Catsash, Newport, Mon
  • T.J Marsh, 41 Victoria Road, Newport, Mon
  • L. Escott, 20 Milton Street, Newport, Mon
  • D. Jones, Alma House, Langstone, Newport, Mon
  • D.G Hall ? no address
  • H. Hando ? no address
  • H.Charles.Bulley, - (definately deceased)
  • R.H. James, - no address
  • Leslie Alan Bulley (definately deceased)

Can anyone provide any further information?
