World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
Stalag XIA, camp 341 was situtaed at Altengrabow.
My late fathers name was Thomas Hughes he served in the Cameron highlanders, and then Army Air Corps from 1928-1945 I dont know much about the camp, just the info from the book. The camp was about 12miles behind enemy lines, apparantly the british contacted the german commandant to oranganise a truce to take british & american pows out, they had no food, and a typhus epidemic was starting, then it became part of the Russian front lines from 4th May 45. The other pows Dutch, Belgians and others were then stuck. My father never never spoke of the time behind the wire, so I never got any info, the irony is I am married to a wonderful german man and his story was also traumaticfrom the other side of course. Theresa Foerster
My father, John McPhee, was a Bdr with the Highland Light Infantry and a POW from 1942 (PD73 Italia) and then Stalag X1A in 1943 and 44 until? His POW number in Germany was 138892. I would like to know where to find information about life in the camp and be in touch with anyone who knew him and possibly from the same regiment in the camp in Italy. I would be grateful for any information.
My father Hastir Léopold, was in this camp and I have found these documents i join this whith this mail. I will ask my brother for the journal of my father in altengrabow.
Arbeit Kommando 756/1 attached to POW Camp X1A, Altengrabow, Germany. Please can anyone help as to the location of this Work Camp in 1944/45.
My father was a POW in Stalag X1A. 1431786 Lance Bombardier William Douglas Telfer McIntosh. He was taken from Campo 78 Sulmona, Italy after the capitulation in 1943. He was very unwell having had an operation to remove a kidney stone. He returned to England to Hospital in Manchester. He died in 2003. He was a remarkably kind, gentle man. Patricia Chandler
My dad, F. Perrée, and was a technical sergeant in the Dutch army, because he sabotaged a factory then he was send 31-5-43 to Stalag 4B, Stalag X1 A Altengrabow and after that to Czechie Stalag 39 Brux Most. In 44 he flied to Czech. farmers and after the war he returned to Netherlands. But told nothing about that period, who can tell me more information and history??Gonnie Perree
Can anyone help me please. My father died at the POW camp Stalag XIa, near Magdeburg, Germany on 21/22 March 1945. I have copies of his death record cards. He has no known grave. As far as I am aware there are no burial sites at Altengrabow now. Would all burials have gone to the Berlin War Cemetery after the end of the war. My father was Pte. E J Rapley of the Queens Royal Regt. and was known as John.
Hope someone out there can help. I am in touch with the Natl EX-POW Assn but have not had any success so far. Also does any one have any knowledge of the location of the Arbeit Kommando 756/1 which was attached to Altengrabow. I think it may have been a quarry.Thank you Janet Savage
