Welcome to the latest updates from The Wartime Memories Project. The Wartime Memories Project is a non profit organisation. This website is run out of our own pockets and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources. Or by cheque to: The Wartime Memories Project, Middleton House, PO Box 325, Stockton on Tees, TS20 1XL. 30 January 2012 - A batch of over 670 new stories have been added to the website today, thanks to our volunteers for their hard work in editing these. 15 November 2011 - We are formulating an exciting project to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Great War in 2014. 13 November 2011 - Thanks to everyone who supported our event yesterday & for the messages from those who couldn't make it. Thanks to our speakers for the excellent talks, we've had some great feed back from those who attended. Massive thanks to the staff of Bishop Auckland Town Hall for all their help and the use of their fantastic facilities. The exhibition continues in the McGuinness Gallery until Saturday 3rd of December. On the 3rd we will be holding a Great War Family History Q&A session at 1pm in the Gallery, all are welcome. 9 November 2011 - The Time Slides Launch Event begins at 10.30am on Saturday 12th November 2011, with a welcome in the Main Hall followed by a series of talks: 11.00am The Dixon Dent Photograph Collection - Ray Heale o Ray will talk about photography in the Edwardian era, with a closer look at some of the images by the award winning photographer William Dixon Dent of Bishop Auckland. 12.20pm Aerial Photography in the Great War o Premiere of a short film made by The Wartime Memories Project for this exhibition, looking at the aircraft, the equipment and the analysis of air photographs from the Dixon Dent Collection. 1.00pm Giving Names to Bones: The Identification of the Dead of the Great War - Alastair Fraser o Alastair will talk about the challenges of discovering the names of soldiers recovered from the battlefields during archaeological excavations. Almost a century after they were killed in action, will forensics and detective work enable their families to attend their funeral? 2.20pm Finding your Family Heroes o This talk will explain how to interpret the available records and where to look for the missing details which will help to reveal the story of your family in the Great War Family History resources will be available in the Library and The Cafe will be open for refreshments between 10am and 2pm. 7 November 2011 - Please note that the first Talk at our Time Slides Event begins at 11am on Saturday, not 1pm as quoted in a couple of newspapers. All talks and entry to the galley are free of charge. 28 October 2011 - Our Great War Family History event "Time Slides" opens two weeks tomorrow, the 12th of November at Bishop Auckland Town Hall. You can now register the name(s) of those you wish to research, on our website. If you can't come along in person, you can take part online. TimeSlides is a Heritage Lottery Funded Event, helping people to discover and share the story of their own family during The Great War 1914- 1918. 24 October 2011 - Over the weekend we have updated our website adding over a hundred new stories which have been checked and edited by our volunteers. Massive thanks to our hardworking volunteer group! We still have a backlog of submissions to work through, if anyone would like to join our volunteers group please get in touch. 27 September 2011 - TimeSlides launch event poster which is going on display this week. 12 September 2011 - In support of the Poppy Appeal, we have just added banners for the Royal British Legion Christmas 2011 draw, good luck everyone! 1 September 2011 - Today in 1999 our first website was launched with a single page containing one story and one photograph. On our 12th birthday the website now stands at over 5000 pages with many thousands of stories and photos, huge thanks to everyone who has contributed and to our volunteers for the all their hard work. Here's to the next 12 years... Also today we've just updated a number of pages for British Regiments in the Second World War, thanks to all who have submitted stories and photos. 19 August 2011 - Whoops! There was an error in the code on our extensive Women's Land Army page, so the stories couldn't be easily accessed. We've now corrected it, thanks to Phyllis for letting us know about the problem. 4 July 2011 - Do you want to learn more about your own family in the Great War? Why not come along to our Hertiage Lottery Funded event - Time Slides, at Bishop Auckland Town Hall. Opens on 12th November 2011 with a family history day. 1 July 2011 - The 1st of July 2011 is the 95th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, today remembrance services are taking place on the battlefield and across the world. Please pause for a moment to remember those who perished and those whose lives were changed forever. 19 June 2011 - Today we have launched The Wartime Memories Project Facebook Page click Like on the page to recieve our updates. We have also updated the Great War pages for The Border Regiment, with new Battalion pages added. 11th May 11 - Menu and navigation updated on 234 pages to improve the useability of the website. 8th May 11 - Sixty Six years after the Victory in Europe. Today over 50 pages have been updated on the website. 16 Apr 11 - The volunteers section has been revamped, if you are a registered volunteer and are having problems logging in, please let us know. 2 Feb 11 - More pages updated. 15 Jan 11 - We are currently editing a large batch of submissions which will be added to the site as soon as possible. 3 Jan 2011 - The Wartime Memories Project are pleased to announce that we have been sucessful in our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. We will be holding an exhibition of Edwardian and Great War photographs at Bishop Auckland Town Hall between the 10th of November and 3rd of December 2011, with family history days at being held on the first and last days. We would love to welcome you and assist with discovering more about your own family. We also have opportunties for volunteers, please get in touch if you would like to be involved. 28 Nov 10 - Approx 350 new stories added to the database today, some real beauties among them. We still have a large number of submissions to process and are working on them as quickly as possible. 27 Oct 10 - We are aware of the issue with some images not showing on the site, this will be resolved when the new version of the page is uploaded. Thank you for your patience. 15 Oct 10 - The redesign of the site is progressing well, though we still have a large number of pages to update. 10 Jul 10 - Many redesigned pages have now been uploaded to the site. 2 Apr 10 - We have now managed to recover several thousand site submissions which had become corrupted by a computer crash, these will take some considerable time to process, if your submission has not yet appeared on the website, we thank you for your patience. 30 Mar 10 - The Volunteers area has been updated, if you are a registered volunteer and are having problems logging in, please let us know. 10 Mar 10 - Approximatley 500 new storys added to the database today, currently some stories listed in the alphabetical pages are not showing on the unit pages, we hope to have this corrected soon. 15 Feb 10 - New pages and new stories added 20 Jan 10 - work continues on updating the website 06 Dec 09 - Website updated, about 500 new stories have been uploaded to the site today. We are still in the process of working through the backlog, thank you for your patience. 11 Nov 09 - On Remembrance Day please take a moment to remember. 30 Sep 09 - The Second World War section of the website is going to be transferred to the new server over the next couple of days, there may be a small interuption of service whilst the transfer completes. 29 Sep 09 - Our new messageboard, guestbook and image gallery are now operational. 1 Sep 09 - The Wartime Memories Project is now 10 years old. We extend our thanks to all our supporters contributors and visitors who have helped to make the project such a sucess. 2 Apr 09 - Work on the website is progressing well, with the whole of the Great War section now transferred to the new server. The Second World War Section is much larger and it will take many more months for the transfer to be completed. Thank you for your patience whilst the transformation takes place. 3 Feb 2009 - The site is now fully operational except for the messageboard. Due to the actions of spammers and hackers we have decided to withdraw the messageboard and all archived messages will be transferred to the main sections of the website. Obviously this is a large task and will take some time to complete. The redesign of the site continues and a large number of pages have been uploaded in the new database driven format, completing this task is a massive undertaking, if you have submitted your relative's details and they are not listed on their regiment/squadron/ship/unit page, please check the alphabetical listings as the main page may not have been revamped yet. Please note that there is very little visual difference between old and updated pages, as a general guide, pages with the address wartimememoriesproject.com have been updatd, those with the address wartimememories.co.uk are older pages and will be updated as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience, we have a huge backlog of stories which are being added as quickly as possible, the site is run by volunteers, many of whom also have full time jobs, it may take time but we will get all the submissions online. Please continue to send your stories in. 12 Jan 2009 - Please accept our appologies for the disruption to the website, caused by a hacker deleting numberous files from the server. We are working to correct the problem and hope to be fully online again soon. 22 Dec 2008 - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Please note that we are currently undergoing a technical redesign of the site to make it more efficient. The change over will take some time to complete and whilst it is in progress the messageboard is not functioning, please send all messages and replies to existing messages via our contact form or by email and we will add them to the site as soon as possible. Please note we currently have a large backlog of submitted material, our volunteers are working through this as quickly as possible and all names, stories and photos will be added to the site. 2 Feb 2008 - As The Wartime Memories Project continues to expand, we have added an additional server. Our volunteers are working hard to transfer the the data across. If you are looking for a new webhost please consider Hostmonster their service so far has been excelent, and offer the best deal we could find. 4 Jan 2008 - Happy New Year to all our vistiors. More stories and photos have been added to the site. 16 Dec 05 - Website Updated 8 Dec 05 - Last night our DVD "The Forgotten Hero" was launched with a preview showing at the St George Hotel. The event was well attended and the film enjoyed by all. Copies of the DVD are now on sale, by mail order and via this website. We were pleased to announce a the launch of a fund raising campaign to enable a copy of the statue to be created and erected in Mynarski's home town of Winnipeg in Canada. For each copy of the DVD soled, £2 will be donated to this appeal, with the remainder of the profit, another £2 going to Middleton St George Primary School. 29 Nov 05 - The Forgotten Hero   The incredibly moving story of one man's bravery and the long campaign to ensure that he will never be forgotten.   The Forgotten Hero DVD will be launched with a preview showing on the 7th of December 2005,7pm at The St George Hotel, Durham Tees Valley Airport. The Wartime Memories Project has been awarded a grant from "Awards for All" this will enable us to purchase a replacement computer and ease the problems we have been having in updating our website. We have a large backlog of material waiting to be added and our volunteers will work through it was quickly as possble. 6 Nov 05 - Website updated, lots more stories and photos added. 26 Oct 05 - Website updated. We are still having problems with our computer situation, please bare with us and we will clear the backlog of material as soon as possible. 27 Aug 05 - Website updated, more stories and photos added. 14 Aug 05 - Please accept our appologies for the lack of updates and response to emails, our computer has come to the end of its life, leaving the group without access to email and unable to update the site. Our volunteers will be using borrowed equipment until funds can be secured for a replacement machine, so please bare with us if we are a little slow in responding. 23 June 05 - website updated. 11 June 05 - We would like to reassure our visitors that unlike some similar sites, The Wartime Memories Project will not be closing down at the end of 2005. With your help, this site will continue to grow and provide an educational resource for many years to come. Please continue to submit your recollections, photos and queries, our volunteers are working hard to clear the backlog and add the material to the site. 5th June 05 - Over the last six months, The Wartime Memories Project have been partnering with Middleton St George Primary School, Keith Maddison and The Northern Echo to chronical the story of the "Forgotten Hero" Our volunteers have filmed sculptor Keith Maddison as he worked on the statue, recorded the educational activities and art projects undertaken by the children, visited the remaining wartime buildings at Middleton St George, undertaken interviews with veterans and of course our cameras were there on the the 4th of June at the emotional ceremony when the statue was unvieled. This incredibly moving story will be available to buy on DVD in the not too distant future. This grant has enabled the project to purchase state of the art video and audio recording equipment, ensuring that any memories recorded are preserved in the best possible digital quality. The grant also provides some funding to allow our volunteers to visit more people who wish to contribute their memories, over the coming year. The grant will also cover the post production costs incurred for an educational DVD made from the recollections. The first pressing of these will be free to schools.(Numbers of free dvds will be dependent on the best deal we can strike for pressing). There will also be up to 25 events arranged (spread over the year) at various venues, where we intend to bring veterans and school children together, learning first hand what it was like to live through those austere and dangerous times. Although this funding is fantastic for the project it does not cover any of the web site costs, we still need your donations to keep the site going. Nor does the funding cover accommodation costs, as things stand at present it looks as though our volunteers will have to carry these costs. Unless that is, anyone out there has any contacts or ideas to help the project overcome the problem. The project is actively seeking persons to interview, especially those with Home Front memories. A number of new pages have been added in the Home Front section to complement our 60th Anniversary of the End of World War Two Celebrations. During 2005 we will endeavour to record as many recollections of life during the war years as possible. If you or any one you know has a story to tell, please get in touch. We didn't know it was so popular. Today more stories, photos and information requests have been added. We still have a large backlog but are working through it as fast as we can. 16 Nov 04 - Website updated, more photos, stories and requests for information added. 9 Nov 04 - More stories added. 4 Nov 04 - Due to the popularity of this site, and the large bandwidth useage, we have now split the guestbook over several pages, this should reduce download time when viewing the guestbook and ease the load on the server. 29 Oct 04 - Website updated - Additional stories and photos added. 27 Oct 04- The website has been occupying its new home for ten(10) days. Recorded hits for these ten days exceeds 112,000. WOW!!!! Keep it coming !!!!!!!! But I think we will need more Bandwidth shortly. (Many thanks from the over worked and unpaid team) 22 Oct 04 - Website updated, our new design is now taking shape. 17 Oct 04 - The website has now moved to the new server. A HUGE THANKS to the volunteers who have worked over the weekend to redesign the site, alter the links and move the 70MB of material to its new home. The new server means that there is now webspace available to begin to upload the backlog of submissions. This will be done as soon as possible. 14 Oct 04 -Thanks to the generosity of those who have made donations towards the running costs of this site, we have been able to purchase dedicated webspace. The website will move to the new server over the next few weeks. There many be some disruption in service whilst the move takes place. We are extreamly grateful to all those who have made donations over the past year, enabling us to secure dedicated webspace for 2005. 20 Sep 04 - Website updated, more stories, photos and requests for information added. 1 Sep 04 - The Wartime Memories Project had now been running for 4 years. We would like to thank all those people who have added their recollections and photographs to the archive. Also a huge thank you those of you who participate in the active online forum that is our message board and to those who have helped others by answering queries from the "Can you Answer" and the "Childrens Questions" sections. Over the last four years this website, thanks to its visitors, has made several people very happy, old friends have been put back in touch, others have been contacted by relatives of their wartime comrades or renewed lost contact with evacuees they took care of during the war. We are currently working on expanding the archive to include audio and video recordings. If you or anyone you know would like to take part please get in touch. We would like to interview on camera anyone who lived through the Second World War or those who have conducted indepth research into wartime activities. These recordings will be used to preserve the recollections for future generations, to provide educational material for schools and researchers and to contribute to documentaries on the subject. Any moneys generated by these recordings will be used to futher this project. If you have not yet added your recollections please consider doing so, many of those who have, have found it a rewarding experience. The messageboard is now functioning correctly once again, links to it from other pages have been updated. 1 Jul 04 - The problem with the messageboard has now been tied down. It has been a victim of its own sucess! The number of messages has filled the entire space on the server, so no more could be added. We have now moved the messageboard to a new server and the problem should now be resolved. 24 Jun 04 - website updated, more stories, photos and requests for information added. The service provider's server was full, so no other messages could be added. They seem to have cleared the space we own, but please report any problems you may encounter. 4 Jun 04 - Website updated. The Guestbook has now been edited and should be displaying normally again, It is checked as often as possible for idiots posting garbage and disrupting enjoyment of the messages left by others. I would like to thank all those people who have added their recollections and photographs to make this site so successful. Also a huge thank you those of you how participate in the active forum that is our message board and to those who have helped others by answering queries from the "Can you Answer" section. Over the first year this website, thanks to its visitors has made several people very happy, old friends have been put back in touch, others have been contacted by relatives of their wartime comrades or renewed lost contact with evacuees they took care of during the war. The project is rapidly growing into a community in its own right I hope the next year will be as successful.
