Comments: My father was A.B. Walter Thomas MILLS. Died 2/12/1940 when H.M.S. Forfar was sunk. I have had contact with Mr.Allen W. Kerr previously, to whom I sent copies of photographs of the ship's band, of which my father was a member, and of some interior shots of the ship, including the ship's theatre. At the time of correspondence Mr. Kerr was seeking news of L.S. Mayo, I hope he was successful.Name:NEIL MONCUR

Comments: I was a child aged around 5 when the WW11 finished. I lived throughout the war in Coventry Warwickshire. OUr house was an edn house We had an underground air raid shelter with a tube running up through the ground for air. It smelt of old damp concrete which I still remember that smell. The air raid sirens would go off which frightened me and I would run screaming into the house.I remember seeing and playing in the streets on the bomb sites with other children of the City. My father worked for the BTH which was turned into a munitions factory then and back to light electronics after the War. Rag and Bone men came for old suacepans to help the war effort. Seeing black and white war films, seeing buy bonds adverts too. My moithers eldest brother was on fire watch and got killed by shrapnell one night my mother told me. My other uncle servided on merchantships. I remember playing with a sailor doll made of rags which he kept in a drawer.I remember sugar in blue bags, the milk delivered by horse cart in measured in Gills in a jug with a saucer to your doorstep. Bread delivered by horse. Ration books and shortage of toys and sweets. I remember the day when sweets didn't need ration coupons! I remember the co-op front damaged and temproary doors put on; Buying broken biscuits for a penny; Yellos sherbert in trinagle small bags. Liquorice sticks. Later we moved to Yorkshire and the Aerodrome Lindholme which had Lincoln bombers and later jets I think. The Americans came later who were good to us local kids and had out first chewing gum in cartoon wrappers. Base ball games and Open Days at the aerodrome in the 50's, and many other things.Name: Jessica

Comments: My Marraige ended in divorce because my mother in law suffered through these japenese camps. The residue left from the suffering caused rage, fear, frustration, anger to males, distrust of males and other negitive emotions which cause more pain in our family. My 3 children are now old enough for them to understand the residue, hate, etc, left from the camps/war. My ex-mom-in-law just recently, 2004, started receiving restitution for that suffering. We need to have a newsletter formed to help the next generations not fall into the scars, emotions still left and transfered to them. If there is a newsletter, anyone, Let me know. Comments: My dad Hector William Clifford (Bill) was a navigator on the Lancasters based At Little Staughton. His nickname was Blackie. Our family has a photograph of 582 Squadron and dad is in it. I know he returned to see this airfield in 1993 on a last trip to the U.K. He died in 1999, never speaking about his war experiences. His brothers and sister said he returned to N.Z. after the war a very different young man to the one who had left N.Z. He married my mother in 1948 and became a teacher. Comments: I am Editor /Archivist for RAF Gosport -HMS Sioskin Association of Veterans and we do much collecting and publication of stories of all the wartime and NS services especillay relevent to our title but not specifically. I publish stories in our magazine and also produce vraious other publications. our book "A Touch Of History" is available from us. it tells the story of Gosport Airfield mainly through personal stories. at present i am compiling a book of stories from our "Tin-Fish Times" magazine. Your project is super and very worthwhile especially now that women at war are honoured with the mew memorial. I am also weriting a book about Phil Tate who was RAF , a musician and who formed the RAF Silver Wings Band and went on to become famous on radio and TV.He and his bands and orchestras and the people who enjoyed them would have been forgotten without our project so i know what hard work your project entails and will help, as soon as i can, with stories and photos etc. keep up the good work!Name: Katy Braddick

Yes, Poland, Soviet Union, Persia, Italy
Comments: I was deported to Siberia from Poland in 1941, with my parents at the age of 15. When we obtained "amnesty" and evacuated to Persia (Iran) I joined Polish Army in Middle East, 2-nd Polish Corps, and we went to Italy. I was in the Italian Campaign, fought at Monte Cassino (the first patrol that went to the monastery was from my regiment -12 Podolski Lancers Regiment) and on the Adriatic Coast (Ancona etc.). I am surprised that Poland is not included in the "Allied Forces". Why Poland is excluded? We were the Allied Forces, Poland had large army during the war, and we contributed to the victory over the Germans. I remember, we were excluded from the Victory Parade in 1945. Is this repeated now? I would be willing to contribute to the memories but under the condition that there will be an entry of Poland in the "Allied Forces" . I will make my contribution upon your response that this matter will be corrected.Name: William G Irving

He died in 1977....before I could spend time with him discussing his experiences. I have a collection of photographs of him in the Middle East in 1942/3 in Baghdad (279 GT COY RASC), Damascus, Cairo, Jerusalem and then in Holland and Germany in 1944/45. If any of his old comrades are still going strong or someone has put together a regimental history of that period I would much appreciate hearing from them. Nick MawerName: HARLEY L. SWIGER

He died in June 2001 at the age of 83. I feel that a proper fitting memorial to this terrible tragedy should be errected and paid for by the British government as well as a proper acknowledgement of the events that took place. What is contained in those documents that are to remain secret until 2040? We can only guess. We should press for an earlier release date. I was trying to find information about my father,Tom Butcher, his regiment, The Welch, his capture in Crete, his time in Stallag's 7A and 8B, and the infamous death or 1000 mile march from Poland. My Father hardly said a thing about his time as a P.O.W. Looking at this site it is apparent that there are a lot of children and grand children that are trying to find out what exactly these men had to endure during these events. My mother was left as I recall collecting National Savings, and boarding various service personnel, names I recall - Norman, Barbara. The local storage of the transport to carry personnel to the depots, sites, airfields etc was just down the road, a corrugated shelter for a garage. I recall a spitfire chasing a doodlebug, seen from the back door. And on a seperate occasion a solitary brick landing in the front garden. My shelter was an indoor type, five doors down was a garden dug `Anderson`. Elsewhere in the road lives a Kath Stevenson who saw service in the Dover Castle area. I still wonder if the Norman and Barbara are still alive or does anyone have memories of there service during 1939-1945. GName: phil Vogler

Comments: I did not know of the existence of your POW camp until I viewed the sequence on a BBB TV Holiday programme on Monday evening 18th April 2005. I am a requent visitor to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire, and on a few iccasions sang there with 'The Ambassadors' Dance orchestra (a 1940s US Army Air Force Big band). I also go to Eden Camp in october for the annual reunion of Palestine Veterans there. On Friday 1st September 1939, at the age of 10 years I was evacuated with my school from the City of Leeds together with my 8 yrs old brother and little sister aged 6. My eledest daughter and her husband are both 1940s enthusiasts ,and their home is a 'time capsule'! They recenty completed the 1940s conversion of their home with the removal of a modern bathroom suite replacing it with (amongst other major conversions) a 'period' pull chain WC and a pedestal bath et al. Must try and visit your camp now I know of its existence - good luck with your work.5. WE WHERE SO GRATEFUL TO THE ALLIES FOR LIBERATING US. MY FATHER NEVER SAID MUCH ABOUT THE WARS EXCEPT HOW FRIGHTENED HE WAS AND THAT HE WISHED IT WOULD NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN, HE GRIEVED ALL HIS LIFE FOR ALL THE FALLEN GOOD MEN. MY HUSBAND AND I GOT TO PAY OUR RESPECT TO THE FALLEN SOLDIERS IN IT. THE ALIED CEMETERY BY ASSISI AND SOUTH OF FLORENCE AND THE GERMAN CEMETERY ON THE FUTA PASS 47 KLM NORHT OF FLORENCE. THER IS HARDLY A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DO NOT THINK OF THOSE YOUNG MEN MAYBE BECAUSE MY BOY WAS KILLED HERE IN KY. HE WAS ONLY 20 AND TODAY HE WOULD HAVE BEEN 38. THE SORROW AND GRIEVE ONE FEELS IN THESE CEMETERIES IS REAL AND THEY ARE KEPT SO BEAUTIFUL, PEOPLE STILL COME TO VISIT THEM. IN THE GERMAN CEMETERY ON THE FUTA PASS, 36.638,00 YOUNG MEN ARE RESTING. ALL THEIR NAMES ARE REGISTERED IN LARGE ADDRESSE BOOKS, THAT IS HOW I FOUND THE GRAVE OF MY DAD'S FRIEND ALFONS MUELLER, HE WAS IN BLOCK 4 GRAVE 97, IF MY MEMORY IS CORRECT. He was mentioned in despatches in the Dunkirk withdrawl and then went to Africa and then Italy, where he was on General Alexanders' staff. He died in 1985 and I wish I'd had more time to get to know him. I've got immense respect for what he did, and am quite fascinated by that whole period. He never talked much about that time, having seen some terrible sights apparently. We should never forget and that's why I think this is a great site. Thanks.Name: Mark Brotherton

In those years we were treated worse than cattle as we had been starved and abused by the Germans, the words of the Geneva Conventions did not exist in the minds of the Germans. Comments: I was evacuated twice during the war, the first time to Reading, with very unhappy memories and the second time to Wales which was much better. The agony of being separated from the rest of my family (except for my younger brother who was with me), stays with me even now. The worry about their safety during the bombing of London was the worst thing. I was 12 so was quite aware of what could happen. We had suffered the Buzz-bombs and just wished we could all be together and safe again. The Welsh people were very kind to us, but nothing could comfort us as we missed our family so much.Name: Fazi

Comments: What a wonderful project. I dimly recollect my grandmother pushing me round in a pram past Woodvale aerodrome adjacent to Formby in Lancashire, to see the bomb craters from German raids on Liverpool docks and the airfield. By the way, Woodvale is still operational flying a Spitfire I believe. However it is not mentioned on your site. Any reason? The Spitfire used to overfly me every morning as I waited for the bus to my school in Crosby.Name: Corrina
