Comments: My Grandad Philip Leslie Corkill who I adored, along with everyone else in the family was a Prisoner of War in Stalag 8B. I know little of his experiences there but I believe he was the camp barber who was also pretty sharp in pickin locks which he did to get into the food stores to help provide food for prisoners who were malnurished. He was not a man to talk of anything about the war but as family I would love to know anything about what he went through especialy as he has now passed. I would love to hear from anyone who has heard of my Grandfather. Thank You

Comments: Great site. My father, George Townson Agg, was a Warrant Officer in the RAAF, 454 Squadron. His plane was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea, and he swam to safety from a burning, sinking aircraft to be rescued by an Italian float plane. He was taken prisoner of war and ended up in Stalag IV B. I have a number of mementoes of his time in Stalag IV B, including a diary of the days leading up to the end of the war, and return to England. Would love to hear from anyone who knew my father back then. Dad died on 30th October 2001, age 82.

Comments: I noted with interest that Raoul Ramos is mentioned several times at your website http://www.wartime-memories.fsnet.co.uk/pow/stalagluft3.html Raoul Ramos was the Top Turret Gunner on my uncle's crew. On 25 Feb 1944, the B- 17 in which Ramos and my Uncle Tony (the Ball Turret Gunner)was on was attacked by 3 ME-109's. My uncle was killed and Ramos went to Stalag Lut III arriving in early March. I have done extensive research on the loss of that plane and have contacted Ramos about the shoot down incident. Can you share any more information on what you have about Raoul Ramos at Stalag Luft III? Do you know of any other Stalag Luft III survivors that might have known him? If so, could you give me their contact information? Thanks in advance for your help, Bob Korkuc rek@korky.mv.com

I, myself, was born on RAF Habbaniya 1953 and still have beautiful childhood memories of Habbaniya airbase. As a child, my father the late Mr Flamers used to take me with him to the ATC to watch British aircraft take off. The latter experience lead me to fulfil my childhood dreams of getting my wings by becoming a private pilot. My father lived and served there with the British Levies until 1958. Once again, thank you for creating this website. Nigel Flamers

I survived WW2 despite the sinkings of 3 ships which I served aboard having signed off Articles these three ships were sunk MV Warwick Castle-- SS Llandaff Castle and SS Cristales. Comments: A really good site. Quite unusual in its layout which is what I like about it. I served with 97 Squadron from April 43 to Feb.45 and then went overseas to Luqa in Malta.until demob in Feb.47 All my real memories are with 97 at BOURN in Cambridgeshire tillApril 44 when we moved to Coningsby. I was a Fitter 2E on Lancs.an had the privilege of servicing a Lancaster for one of the RAFs great Bomber Pilots with a smashing Crew. Wing Commander " Ted " Porter who coming back off leave two days early on August 16/17 1944 took a scratch crew on a Minelaying raid on Stettin. All were tragically killed. I now run the squadron association Website as listed under my homepage above. Des Evans.

Comments: Hopefully, the presence of web sites such as this, will remind us lest we forget, of the great sacrifices made, both physically and mentally, by our forefathers. I now have a deeper understanding of the indifference felt by those survivors who fought for the freedom of their respective countries, only to witness the slow and painful degeneration in present-day society and governments alike, who now treat them as second-rate senior citizens and not with the respect that they deserve - unless of course there is an anniversary and photo-opportunity available!!! Comments: VETERANS IN YOUR LIFE Hopefully, veterans in your future may be few and far between, but you're bound to have plenty of them in your past and still in your midst right now. From the Revolutionary war of 1775-76, through the wars 'to end all wars' down to the many latest ongoing 'police actions', you've had a friend, cousin, father, grandfather or other member of your circle directly involved in some sort of service to your country. Many were left to rot where they fell, many came back in pieces and some never came back at all. Some were blown away on unknown battlefields far from their families and loved ones. Some went down in the belly of thie ships, gasping for that last precious breath of life. Some, who never knew any higher power existed, suddenly found themselves calling out with a new found fervor on finding that civilized man is quite capable of treating fellow humans in ungodly ways. Some were left forgotten as POW's or MIA pawns to be debated and traded and as years wore on. Most all of those who served and those that eventually got back home were profoundly changed mentally, physically and spiritually. Whether it was a member of the Concord Militia, an early patriot that fought with Washington against the British, a later doughboy, GI Joe or plain 'ol Grunt, you own them all a debt that can never be fully paid. Visit Valley Forge, Manassas, the French coast or any of the many other fields of history. Put yourself in those shoes. Imagine what went on and just what life was like for those doing what they felt was right at the time, for a cause they believed in. Support the many veterans still here with you who have given much for you and your children, grandchildren and on down the line. Encourage your congressmen to place high priority on the needs of those who have given much of their lives for the freedom of us all, and support your local organizations that represent veterans. Fly your flag. Stand tall when watching a parade that includes veterans. Put a flag on their graves to show your respect and reaffirm your thankfullness. Think of what it is for you to be standing and living while a veteran, who helped provide the freedom you now take for granted, lies six feet under. Don't do it just on Veterans Day, the Fourth of July or any other holiday. Do it in your hearts, minds and deeds every day of the year. Why should you do any less ???

I am doing research on the Emberley's from Burin, NFLD. and was wondering if by any chance we are related. My great grandmother was Harriet Margaret Emberley, she married a George Doherty then they moved to Sackville, N.B. My uncle Robert MacFadden was on the HMCS Georgian during WW 2 so it interests me to read about the different aspects of the war and the different ships that went overseas. The Georgian was a minesweeper. I have contacted three men that were on this ship with him during that time. Thanks.

If anyone out there has relatives whose names appear on our War memorial (see web site link above for details) please DO get in touch. We are planning publication to co-incide with the 60th anniversary of the end of WW2. Some died as POW's including Phillip Andrew Baldwin (on the march west) and Maurice Webster (shot for 'being cheeky to a guard') and information about them would be particularly welcome. This is one of the best web sites on the web, and surely shows the best of what can be got from the internet.

They had been given orders to shoot any british soldiers they saw retreating. He would'nt speak about the war, other than to say how awful it was. He said they were liberated by the russians and went with them to liberate other camps nearby. So much we will never know and lets hope we never ever forget how so many were sacrificed. Lets hope that WW2 was the last ... thanks again I will come back to this site. Its huge and I was overwhelmed by it

Since 1945, Chester and Merle had not seen or spoken to each other until the fall of 2001. Thru the internet Chester had found Merle's phone number. Merle was able to come and spend the Christmas Holidays with the Gainey family in Smithland Ky. It was a wonderful Christmas present for both of them as my dad died March 2, 2002. As of this writing Merle is still living and keeps in touch with our family. At my dad's funeral, one of the soldiers who had come to play taps and fold the flag said that members of his family had been overseers of the German POW camps. His immediate family had left Germany because they didn't like that connection. Life sure has some twists! I have always been so proud of my father. He was a wonderful person. I went to bed at 5.30 and awoke at 11 am. to carry on reading. I selfishly originally was looking for anyone in royal marines wW2. who maybe knew my Dad JOHN/JACK POMFRET FROM LANC and also any ats mems that may know my mother MARGARET JOAN POMFRET SHE IS NOW 81 AND DID NOT SEE HER PART IN THE WAR AS ANY GREAT DEAL COMPARED WITH THE MEN'S PART.I asked her if she had ever been frightened to and near death and she said oh many times in the blitz and could not always get to an airaid shelter.Well you nearly lost your life and did jobs that women had to do, because there was not enough men mum.Fancy feeling your contribution to the war effort was not serious, but this is typical of how women my mother's age/ilk see suffering has a norm in her own sex.Iread of how 9 sons went to war and they all came back, what a lucky mother that was,but what pain and anxiety the folks at home must have gone through, this must have been their own secret war. I loved the youngsters VIEWS, on this comments in the guest book side because I know that if my father could sit here and read them he would say "THER'S HOPE YET JUDE".In these troubled times( BUSH /BLAIR )AND REAGAN DYING, HOW APT , MAYBE OUR GREAT GRAND CHILDREN WILL NOT HAVE TO BE TOLD TO REMEMBER WAR , THEY WILL HAVE LEARNT A LESSON THAT PERHAPS WE FAILED TO DO.GOD BLESS THE WORLD AND ALL WHO HAIL IN HER.
