Comments: "We buried another veteran today" We buried another veteran today. He went to his God, from us, he went away. This one was young, in the prime of his life. He left twin children and a very courageous wife. It wasn’t a bullet, a plane crash or a bomb. It was cancer, and he just finally, could not hold on. He fought “it” like a military campaign. But the time came to surrender, to end his earthly pain. He knew he would be fine in the presence of his Lord. But what about his twins, those children he adored? Will they grow strong and at “life” win. Please God, let them always remember him. We buried another veteran today. It seems, all my life, it has happened this way. From my uncles of the WW II-time frame. To the military friends, Vietnam would claim. For me the number of dead, is always on the rise. When I get a call another veteran is gone, it is never really a surprise. From lost sub-mariners, in early days of my life. To the forever gone, military-medical friends of my veteran wife. I lost a Korean War veteran friend this year, to a crashed airplane. I lost a Gulf War friend to cancer, a difference in their age, but still that pain. I lost an Uncle to cancer who did Korea with the Navy, steaming off shores. I lost my father-in-law who fought in Korea, from a “fox-hole” in the frozen outdoors. We buried another Veteran today. It seems in all my family’s generations, it happens this way. From my Revolutionary War Grandfathers who started this sad, but needed trend. To the family members on both sides in 1861, who just would not bend. Some of my family lived a long and happy life, after “their” war. They died of old age in their bed, safe-behind a locked door. They died in battle, buried where they fell. They died years later, carrying emotional scars, in their own personal hell. My family is no different than thousands who met our Nation’s call. They rose to the demands of this country and some gave their “all”. We have to continue doing this, to make America free. But, it’s that Veteran’s twin-little children that keeps worrying me. We buried another Veteran today. It seems all my life it continues this way. Now my only child is nine and we reside on a military installation. My wife and I truly want her to live safe, in a free nation. But what happens, when it is her-generation’s turn to make a stand. Do we lose our only child in some forsaken-foreign land? Does she play it safe, stay home and say “that’s boy’s stuff”. Or does she join like her mother and go right into the ruff. She has to be that one Veteran I don’t see, make that final “call”. Let me go before her, let me first give this country my fighting “all”. Maybe if I go “out-there” and make my final stand. She can stay safe-at-home, in this wonderful free land. We buried another Veteran today. Major Van Harl, USAF Ret. Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, 28 November 2001 vanharl@aol.comName: Michele Carroll

Comments: At my age at the time, very exciting, though harrowing during the blitz. All my uncles were in the Army abroad in Africa. My Grandmother and my aunt were victims of a Buzz Bomb but lived to tell the tale. My mother battled on as a clippie and got blown off the back of a N0:24 Bus at Pimlico. Fortunately just cuts and bruises. My father was a Fireman and saw many terrible things during the blitz which he has never been able to forget. Comments: I'm trying to find anyone who has contacts to the 625 sqd canadian air force or a pilot named D ABBOTT. We have come acrooss his trainging manual and his pilots flying log book, we would like to find out alot more about him as it is an unusual find you might agree. These are the following details which we have so far: His name is D.Abbott number 1804293 of the royal canadian airforce. Going on his log book we think he joined up in 1943, he started to learn to fly around aug 24th 1943, in a cornell. we think he was first based in Regina, Saskatchewan. We think he finished here on the 14th octobe 1943,then commenced training 19th october 1943 at Claresholm, Alta. Then he finished his training 10th march 1944 according to his paper work he was part of course 92, no. 2 sqd. He achieved a pass result of 69.2% on type Lancaster I.& III. on the 29th november 1944. He started his campaign on 3rd feb 1945 The sqd was disbanded on 2nd october 1945. Thats all the info we have so if anybody knows were we can find out more please don't hesitate to let me know, many thanks. mattName: David Highsted

Comments: I am truly pleased to have found such a great website. I am 76 now and living in France. I was 11, and living in Londons' East End when the war broke out and was evacuated to S.Wales, Tredegar to be exact. Like many kids at the beginning, during what was affectionately called 'The Phoney war',went back home only to get caught up in the blitz. Lost our complete home. At 16 Joined the Royal Navy, served in the North and South Atlantic and finally in the Med'. At the end of the war I was on the ship H.M.S. Ranpura that had Hitlers' private yacht tie-up alongside. I gather that it had been bought by an American millionaire and was due to be sailed back to the USA . I've never heard anything more of the yacht since she left our side. Is there anyone out there who could pass on any information to me as to her subsequent history. Once again my congratulations on a great site. My regards, Ralph.Name: John phillips

Comments: Yes, I lived mostly in Canterbuury during the 2 World war with my mother and sisters. We watched the dog fights overhead during the Battle of Britain. Canterbury was blitzed in June 1942 although we had had quite a few bombs drop on the city before the blitz. I married a Canadian soldier in Nov. 1942 and then when the war was over I travelled to Alberta Canada with my little baby girl.Name: Dave

Comments: I have been dong family research and only this year discovered that my maternal grandmother was Annie Waterman. My Mum was her first child born 1911 out of marriage when Annie was 19, and adopted at birth to whom I knew as my Nana/Popa. Annie then married in 1916, but her husband was killed in France ni 1918. Her 2nd husband was George E Waterman born approx 1901 in Ipswich, who was a Foreman Bricklayer at RAF Cosford from about 1940 until his retirement in approx 1965. They lived in Loak Road, Albrighton. I am trying to contact anyone who has any records of either of these two people George & Annie Waterman or can assist me in locating their graves please. Any information appreciated. Don Roberts, PO Box 121, Putaruru, Waikato, New Zealand. I was born in Birkenhead, UK.Name: Barbie Graham

Comments: At the age of eight years,in July 1939,I was evacuated to Berwick upon Tweed from Heaton, Newcastle on Tyne. Was taken in under the good care of Mary Hindhaugh of Seaview, Berwick. Both she & her husband made me very welcome making me feel in a happy home. Currently we live in N.S. Canada. During a visit to the UK in 1988 we had the good fortune to be staying over night in Berwick. Driving around we located Seaview. and with the help of a 'milkman' we were able to have ajoyous, unexpected, reunion with "Aunt Mary" I have never forgotten this experience, even under the circumstances of the war, it was a happy memory which I have retained over the years.Name: robert wilson

Comments: The following book tells us about Sweden's crucial role in supplying Nazi Germany iron ore and military facilities. Especially notorious for their support to the Nazis were the Wallenberg family, SEB bank and SKF factory. The Swedish government was responsible for the most iron ore the Nazis received. Kiruna-Gällivare ore fields in Northern Sweden were all important to Nazi Germany. These massive deliveries of iron ore and military facilities from Sweden to Nazi Germany lengthened World War II. Casualties of the war have been estimated at 20 million killed in Europe. How many of them died due to Sweden's material support to Nazi Germany, is not known. Gerard Aalders and Cees Wiebes The Art of Cloaking Ownership: The Secret Collaboration and Protection of the German War Industry by the Neutrals: The Case of Sweden. The University of Michigan Press. 208 pp. 1996 Fritz, Martin. Swedish iron ore and German steel, 1939-1940. Scandinavian Economic History Review 21, no.2: 133-144. 1985. Firms located in 'neutral' Sweden supported the Nazis' financial and industrial leadership. The case of Enskilda, a bank owned by the still powerful Wallenberg family, proved to be particularly interesting. Among other things, Enskilda acted as a cloak for the Nazi regime and helped important German corporations like Bosch, IG Farben and Krupp to hide their foreign subsidiaries in order to avoid confiscation by the Allied governments. www.suomalaisuudenliitto.fi/case.htmName: Kerry Lee Miller

Comments: Great website. Very useful for tracking my great uncle (Duncan Stephen - 7th Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, 51st Highland division, 154th brigade), and getting an idea of his POW experience, as part of my investigation into my ancestry. Comments: I was a war child. I was born in 1938 and lived on the outskirts of Liverpool throughout the war. We had an Anderson shelter in the garden and I can clearly remember being dressed in my siren suit and taken down to the shelter and hearing the sound of the German aircraft and the thump of the nearby ack-ack guns taking them on. Had all the war time privations , no sweets, never had an orange or a banana until I was about 7 years old., no chocolate and I remember helping my mother bring home the rations. I remember children at school who we all had to pray for because they had lost their fathers, mostly in the merchant navy. Did the usual things like collecting shrapnel from the ac ack guns and seeing aircraft fuselages being transported from Liverpool docks to somewhere or other. We had a black american regiment stationed near us and we used to look at them in wonder. They were very kind and threw us chewing gum over the school hedge. I remember the celebrations of V E Night and VJ Night and wondered why my mother and other women were crying. My father was a policeman all during the war and he would sometimes be able to pop in if there was a bad Liverpool blitz just to see we were OK. My mother and father are now both dead but I only relaised in later life what they had gone through and how they must have worried for me and my brother and sister. We owe their generation a massive debt and if this site perpetuates their memory then it serves a truly wonderful purpose. God bless them and all those who never saw the end of it.Name: Hilda Bignall

No Uncle executedPOW, Canada
Comments: What a wonderful wealth of information and stories passed on thru your site. THANK YOU! Lest We Forget. My Uncle was a "LITTLE BLACK DEVIL" and was one, of 156 Canadian Prisoners of War, who were executed in JUNE 1944 in Normandy. He stormed the beach in the D-Day landings and made it inland only to be taken prisoner with group of 40 comrades... they were executed in a field near the Fontenay le Pesnel Rd. 35 of those men didn't survive, and its only been recently that the mystery/story about what happened to my Uncle has come to light. The mystery is solved too late for my grandparents and all of my Uncles siblings, because they have all passed away now... but it's not too late for our generation and our children and grandchildren to know the story... War is an ugly thing but I know if my Uncle, and all the other Vets and Fallen Soldiers, hadn't done what they did... well... for the Freedoms we enjoy .......THANK A VET......the personal costs to the soldier made the keeping of our freedoms and security possible. You VETS deserve nothing but respect and support, financial and medical...etc. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PART AND FOR YOUR SACRIFICES for WW2! and need toName: judith barrow

Comments: Last November I asked if anyone had images of the Spitfire Factory at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, England. Sadly no replies - yet? But I still live in hope. I have a lot of WW2 research done on my site now on many aspects, mainly U Boat, Merchant Navy, Bismarck and the only web site on HMS Kite (One of Walker's Own!). I also run a reunion site for members of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment and, again, would welcome old images in either WW2 or from 1966 onwards. To everyone who sweated through hell in WW2 for our sakes, look at the planet now and ask "was it worth it"? Sometimes I have my doubts!Name: alis oldfield + roy palmer

Comments: Just to say that my father, Leonard Mugridge, who was with the Devonshire regiment (I think and airborne regiment?) was in Stalag XIB. Didn't say much about it but it obviously made a hell of an impact on him after. He sadly passed away last year and I think many things went with him of this place that he never told anyone. Actually said that most of the Germans were not terrible there but one took his personal belongings. Said the Russians were treated very badly indeed. I have as a momento a few knives and forks that he somehow managed to get out of the German officers mess with 'Offizierheim Fallingbostel' written on them...still perfect and not a sight of rust on them. Did anyone know of him?? I would be so interested to hear of my father in this period as I know so little form himself. Thankyou. Ken MugridgeName: almougy davis
