Comments: Pleased to sign in . As co- creator of 97 Squadron Website { www.97-squadron.co.uk } I welcome the opportunity of congratulating the layoput of this particular site. We all need to swap information as much as possible to assist in tracing old friends.. I would appreciate any help I can get to trace a George Stephenson. Hewas a Navigator and survived the War. We believe he may have been with either 619-617 or possibly 83 Squadron. We know he was at Woodhall and at Wyton. He completed his service we believe as a Navigator Instructor, possibly in Canada. A Grandaughter is desperate to seek information. Many thanks Des Evans.Name: Ian Duffield

Comments: I think it's great that you're doing a site such as this! World War I has become "our great-grandfathers'" war and World War II is rapidly fading into the past. It is essential that we understand and remember what happened in the Second World War and the best source is the people who actually lived through it. I wish you you all the best in your project, you are doing something for all of us!Name: stephanie smith

Comments: Yes this really is a good website for its very good information about WW2. I have my story on the webpages about my schooldays and being an evacuee from the London blitz. I have put my experiences to good use by helping students with their WW2 history dissertations about evacuation and my own personal story. It is a bonus for me when they get back to me telling me that they have an A level for history due to my help. If any youngsters need help with their history projects concerning the evacuation I will be happy to help them if they contact me at my email address. Comments: My brother Kenneth W. Doran (2nd Lt.)Cleveland, OH was shot down in his P-52 on 7/4/1944. He finally was taken to Stalog III where he was held until May, 1945 when the war ended. He kept a diary of his time in prison camp. He thought the men of the "great escape" were his heroes. Kenneth died in 1979 at the age of 58 from ulcers he developed while in prison camp. He was proud to have served in the Air Force. These men did not talk much about their time in prison camp and had no parade when they finally came home. But I know personally the mental anguish and suffering they endured for the rest of their lives. THEY WERE MY HEROES. GOD BLESS THEM ALL!Name: Anne Lesnick

Comments: Loved reading the excerpts from persons who had lived in Bridlington during WW2. My sister and I lived with my mother and maternal grandmother in Bridlington for the duration of the war. I was able to remember the bombing and the trips to the bomb shelters. I remember lying in bed and watching the searchlights in the night sky. It was interesting to hear about the soldiers billeted about town as I can remember them being across the road from where we lived and them coming to our house. Excellent site.Name: carol kachek

No. Born 1947, Comments: Excellent site. I'm old enough to remember the airodrome at Breighton still being operational. Our house adjoined it, and I was taken from my bed (being sick with measles) to see, and sit on the wing of, a Spitfire. We witnessed the gradual shutting down of the base until it was left as a wonderful playground for the village children. I didn't know what a tennis court was and thought this big mesh enclosure was where the P.O.W.'s were kept! I'm now trying to find anyone who may remember my Mum when she was in the Air Force. Her name was Margaret Rhodes nee Jackson and she will be 80 this year. She was a telephonist with Balloon Command, and I know she was at Falmouth on D-Day which was also her 21st birthday. Her service number was 2050224. She served in a number of places but I don't have their names at the moment. She wore one of "Mrs. Roosevelts' Dresses" when she and Dad married in September 1944. Dad, John Rhodes, was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery and he served in Malta during the siege, Kenya, Singapore, and Germany after the War. I'd also love to contact anyone who knew him. Sadly Dad died in 1969.Name: Crystal Casler

Uncle died in WWII, USA
Comments: Sirs, I have been researching the death of my Uncle Ensign Roy Edward Jones USNR for about three years now. I first discovered he was on the Escort Carrier USS Windham Bay. Then when there was no mention of his death in the deck log of that aircraft, I researched more to find he had been transfered to the USS Admiralty Islands. The deck log of that ship states on April 18th, 1945 that at "1449 - F6F from USS Essex crashed into catwalk on port side after a wave-off and went over the side admidships. Plane guard reported no survivor. Pilot was Ensign Roy E. Jones 395853, A1, USNR" I am wondering if he was assigned to the Essex as a replacement pilot while the Essex was supporting the Okinawa Campaign, but find no mention of him on the USS Essex website as a Pilot. Or, might he have been returning a damaged aircraft to the Admiralty Islands for repair, and unable to successfully land the crippled aircraft? I hope that one of the Veterans that read this may have some additional information. Your assistance would mean the world to me. Thank you, Keith Anderson Delphilabs@aol.comName: Marilyn (Leland) Bennett

Read recently that here in the US, WWII Vets are leaving us at the rate of 1700 per day. I have a website dedicated to the men that served in the carrier USS Essex CV9 during the war in the pacific. Stories and photos; a place to remember. These men of the greatest generation need to be remembered for what they did and for what they stood far. Your website goes a long way toward doing that. Comments: This is a thoroughly riveting read! As I read through a great many of the entries, I felt a sense of sadness for those trying to fill the knowledge void of family and friends who served in "the war." At the same time, one cannot help but feel a sense of awe and wonderment knowing that so many dedicated people gave their all to make the world a much better place. I myself, am a 20-year military vet, but my service was in peacetime, and I'm thankful to all those who participated in WWII to make it so. I certainly wish everyone who has posted here the very best of luck in gaining the knowledge they are seeking. Further, I wish everyone who has not heard of this website, the good fortune to visit soon. This is a very good thing going on here! --BillName: Charlotte Hay

Comments: JIM WEIR was in RCAF in 1944 stationed in PEMBROKE DOCK, South Wales UK. He,like many others, found comfort from the agonies of war in the arms of a woman who likewise was a victim of the trauma of WW11. Who are we today to judge them? Are we so pure in thought? I was born from that union in June 1945. I would dearly love to tell my grandchildren what my father did in the war, where he came from and if they look like him.I have searched for him ever since I accidently found out about him. There are thousands of 'war babes' like me who need to know their roots. To quote Alex Haley "In all of us there is a hunger marrow deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are,and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning, no matter what our attainments in life, there is a most disquieting lonliness" How true! My Father (Drummer Tully) was an POW in Japan for nearley 6 years, sadly no longer with us. He never spoke of his time there, but then who did. Comments: Sweden's crucial role in supplying Nazi Germany iron ore and military facilities. Especially notorious for their support to the Nazis were the Wallenberg family, SEB bank and SKF factory. The Swedish government was responsible for the most iron ore the Nazis received. Kiruna-Gllivare ore fields in Northern Sweden were all important to Nazi Germany. These massive deliveries of iron ore and military facilities from Sweden to Nazi Germany lengthened World War II. Casualties of the war have been estimated at 20 million killed in Europe. How many of them died due to Sweden's material support to Nazi Germany, is not known. Gerard Aalders and Cees Wiebes The Art of Cloaking Ownership: The Secret Collaboration and Protection of the German War Industry by the Neutrals: The Case of Sweden. Firms located in 'neutral' Sweden supported the Nazis' financial and industrial leadership. The case of Enskilda, a bank owned by the still powerful Wallenberg family, proved to be particularly interesting. Among other things, Enskilda acted as a cloak for the Nazi regime and helped important German corporations like Bosch, IG Farben and Krupp to hide their foreign subsidiaries in order to avoid confiscation by the Allied governments.Name: James H Weaver

His plane was lost over the Dark Forest on the 4-12-1944. He is an Australian citizen and was a rear gunner on the Lancaster bomber. He was on a flight to Heilbronn Germany when the aircraft went missing and crashed somewhere near the Dark Forrest, Germany. He was the sole survivor of the Lancaster Bomber crew. Comments: A very interesting site. It is good to see such diverse experiences from those who suffered the bombing at home (I couldn't wait to get back to the front after a short leave at home - at least I could do something instead of just sitting waiting for the next bomb) to those who were in the forces.Name: John Gordon Berg

Comments: This is a very interesting site. I served as a WAVE in Washington, D.C. during WWII and met several WRENS from England at the Whitney Mansion in New York City. This beautiful mansion behind St. Patrick's Cathedral was converted to a hostel for women in the military. We paid 50 cents for an overnight stay.

Comments: F/O(O)Harold Francis Longworth(26) 418Sqn.RCAF killed Oct.17,1942, Wales, was prior to enlistment a High School Phys/Ed Instructor in my home-town. There were 26 Aircrew (I've researched & instigated)fom here lost during WWII of which one of the newest streets (+LONGWORTH ST.) have been named after, including an'Emblazened Red Poppy'pre-empting, signifying a veteran lost during WWII. Hoping for results, Thank You. BCName: David Forward
