I often wonder if i would have been so brave.but i am glad you all were, cause me and others like me, wouldnt be here now. I think you all deserve medals. and if you havent got any. you should.... We owe all of these young men and women a huge debt of gratitude, and websites like this one will surely keep the memory of their sacrifice alive. God bless them one and all.Name:Peter FOY

He was sent to London during the blitz and as far as I know was hospitalized for a short time while he was there. I have had no luck finding his service records but I believe the old Lauriston road fire station in Edinburgh has a small collection.Name:hugh kerr mc cann

Comments: This is a wonderful site! Thank you for all the stories. I am an American and lived with my family, in SE London (2000-2005). No one I knew was an evacuee but my son (in year 6) had a chance to be in a play, "It"ll All Come Out In The Wash" at the Greenwich Theater. In seeing the play, it opened my eyes to a part of history and peoples lives that I had not known. I am grateful for the information as I love to research WWII England. Thanks again for all your stories. They are eye openers. Denise, formerly of PlumsteadName:Shaun O'Brien

He was a truely wonderful man, and spoke little about his experiences! His name was James Garland McMorrin, rank P/A/L/Sgt Army No. 921119. Born and died in Dumfries. Comments: This is a tremendous site - reading the testimonials, I recognise the humility of the men who fought in the greatest battle, not wishing to put themselves forward as anything other than ordinary men. I have compiled stories and memories over the years and would like to continue to do so, with the main thoughts that future generation must never forget the ultimate sacrifice that was put at risk and on many occasions simply taken - I appreciate your memories and thoughtsName:julian

Comments: Very interesting website. I thoroughly enjoyed it - many memories came flooding back regarding airfields and aircraft in that area. Although I wasn't quite old enough for the RAF, I did volunteer at 16 and half for aircrew in 1943, but my father wouldn't let me go. I actually flew (whilst in the ATC) with the 'dambusters' I eventually joined the FAA (for 22 years) Congrats on a fine site!Name:Shirley Bemiss Thompson

Comments: My dad, Lee Bemiss, was a prisoner during WWII at Stalag IXB at Bad Orb, Germany. He was thirty five when he enlisted in the 106th Infantry Division. Captured in the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 19, 1944, he nearly died, and when liberated on April 1, 1945, he had to be carried out of the prison on a stretcher. He had left a wife and three small children at home to go and defend our country and I will always remember the day when he stepped off the train and returned to us. I was nine years old. When Dad was going to leave for the service, I had given him a quarter and a snapshot of us kids, which he was able to hide from the Germans. When he came home, he had the quarter which he had worn so smooth, it was not recognizable, and the picture which was so crumpled you could hardly see what it was. They had been his treasures. We had my dad with us until 1979 when he died of cancer. I have been able to find some of the other soldiers who were there with him, and they have shared their stories. This has been a great site to read through, and to everyone involved, I would like to say thank you.Name:Keith Renicor

Pulled back with 82nd to Brussels Belgium. 1944 enlisted in The Royal Dutch Navy. Signed up until 6 months after the war with Japan would end. I was part of the U.S. Navy Group Holland Flew over to London and put on a waiting ship, where I experienced a V2. Later after Navy training I was sent to an American Navy camp on the peninsula Roseneath Scotland in 1945 as an officer of administration to register and guide the Dutch "war volunteers" who had signed up for the Dutch marines. After Japan capitulated several university students asked to be released from their enlisted time to continue their studies, which was granted. I started my studies at the Agricultural University in Wageningen. In 1957, because I had suffered during the war and my elderly home was bombed,I was eligible for a special refugee reief act and emigrated to the U.S.A. where I worked and taught at two universities. There's a photo of him and a group of other POW's on the Australian War Memorial site. Dad didn't have too much to say about his experience during the war - he once said to me that "as frightening as it was, he wouldn't have swapped the experience for anything". Comments: In memory of my uncle Flight Sergeant Robert Stanley Smith who flew as a flight engineer on Lancaster bombers with 90 sqn from RAF Tuddenham. I know very little about his service history but understand from my family that he flew more than one tour of operations (without a scratch on him!!!) May the bravery and dedication to duty shown by himself and so many like him never be forgotten.Name: Amanda Lees

Comments: My grandad THOMAS EDWARD BILLINGTON fought in eygypt.as a child i listend to many of his wartime recolections.they filled me with pride for all the very brave men and women who lived and died during the war.My grandad was in ciro,I know he drove all the troops around and i do have a photo of him on a horse but because i was very young i dont know much about what regiment he served in .Amongst many of his recolections i remember him telling me that he was driveing the men somewhere and his truck was bombed.my grandad and i think he said one other man survived.it must have been so horrific for both my grandad and my nana IVY BILLINGTON who was at home bringing up the children, but through it all they must have been very strong people and they shared a special love for each other as they were married long enough to see their 60th wedding aniversary.they went on to have 6 children and 19 grandchildren and as you can imagine lots of great grandchildren.sadley my grandad passed away earlier this year and my nana passed away in 2000 but they will always hold a special place in my heart. I will always remember them both with love and pride.THANK YOU.Name: S. Fumerton

Comments:I stumbled across this website whilst researching my family tree and although have yet to find my grandmother reading the stories have made me feel I know just a little bit more. My grandmother was called Norma Winnifred Ludlow and was born in 1927. I have heard tales that she was in the Land Amy and this is how she met my Grandfather who was in the RAF. Sadly she passed away and I never got to ask her about it all.Name:AMIE

Comments: First of all this is a great web site. I came across two pictures of my Dad. His name was John Camron from Mallaig, Scotland. He was captured in Dunkirk. He never spoke about the war but I do remember a couple of his comrades coming to visit him in Fort William when I was young. He is no longer with us, he passed in 1990. I wish he could have seen this site. I have a couple of pictures that I have found so I will scan them and get them on this site, ASAP. Maybe someone will recognise a family member.

Comments:Lived in Southwark, London from 1940 to 1945 of the war. Age about 2. Remember vividly the bombing and underground shelters. Also the underground stations which we used to go down during bombing. We then moved to my grandmother's house. We attended Charles Dickens School Southwark. Your Wartime Memories Site is exceedingly interesting. My father George Edward Phillip Sweetapple served in REME during this time and made his way through France Belgium and Holland to Germany eventually on the Army Tanks repairing them. He was also at Luneberg, helped liberate Belsen camp, and then Nuremberg after the war had ended, and was delayed being demobbed for this reason

I am always amazed how much you people do for us and for so little, just as those men did in the last war. I am a semi professional photographer and have taken many photographs for my own satisfaction at your events throughout the years. I would be only too pleased to donate any that may be of use to you.
