Voluntary Aid Detachments, provided additional medical aid to the Territorial Forces Medical Service. Set up in 1909 by the British Red Cross and the Order of St John of Jerusalem, at the request of the War Office, VAD's were organised by county branches and volunteers, both men and women, were trained in first aid and nursing. At the outbreak of war the two organisations joined together under the name and badge of the Red Cross to form the Joint War Committee.
Through out Britain auxiliary hospitals and convalescent homes were administered with the VAD undertaking general nursing duties and administering first aid. Qualified nurses were also employed and VADs gave their service in Military Hospitals. In addition, clerical and kitchen duties were performed by VADs and as many men were engaged in military service, women VADs took on roles such as ambulance drivers, civil defence workers and welfare officers.
VADs also worked abroad providing medical services behind the front lines.
The British Red Cross have a card index for WW1 VAD's which gives basic information such as where served. For details see the Red Cross website.
