The Great World War - Day by Day is a NEW section we are currently building.

From diary entries and letters we hope to build a picture of what it was really like to live through the events of the war.

  • Lord Kitchener of Khartoum was appointed Secretary of State for War and Kitchener's call to arms started.
  • The War Council asked the British Indian government to send two infantry divisions and a cavalry brigade to Egypt. The Lahore and the Meerut Divisions and the Secunderabad Cavalry Brigade were selected and formed the Indian Army Corps.
  • The men of the 6th Battalion (Territorials) Royal Lincolnshire Regiment marched to Grantham Station to begin their journey to the front.
  • The 329th R.I. French infantry regiment, leave Le Harve, for the front.
  • Isle of Man Volunteer Corps were called up.
  • 1st Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment were at Aldershot, extract from their war diaries: "2nd day of mobilization. 297 Reservists Depot arrived 12.20pm. All horses except 8 received by 12 noon. 141 reservists from Depot 9.15 pm. 8 horses received & complete."
  • 1st Btn. Wiltshire Regiment were at Tidworth extract from their war diaries:2nd day of mobilization - progress normal.
  • The invasion of Belgium, The Battle of Liege, began.
  • A Zeppelin bombed Liege in Belgium but was forced to land after encountering artillery-fire.
  • "Polish Legions" of Pilsudski, were the first Austro-Hungarian unit to cross the Austro-Russian border
  • HMS Diana a Cruiser with Force G Channel, captured a German merchant ship.
  • HMS Amphionstruck a mine off the Thames Estuary.
  • HMS Savage captured the German ship Kalymnos
  • HMS Invinciblewas dispatched to Queenstown for trade protection duties.

    • Petty Officer J.D Towillis. HMS Amphion.
    • Frederick William Pound. Age 16 HMS Amphion.
    • William James Douglas. Stoker 2nd Class HMS Amphion.

    • Major Adolar Merkatz. II/Fus.R. 35
    • Hauptmann Peter Freiherr von Puttkamer. 6/Fus.R. 35
    • Hauptmann Freiherr von Diecklage Rudolf. 2/Infanterie Regiment 74
    • Generalmajor Friedrich von Wussow. 14th J. Brig
