The 8th (East Belfast) (Service) Battalion was raised in Belfast September 1914 from Belfast Volunteers. They joined the 107th Bde(36th Div) at Ballykinler for training and in July 1915 moved to Seaford. The arrived in France in October 1915 landing at Boulogne.

From the 5th November 1915 to 3rd Feb 1916 the 8th served with with 107th Bde.(4th Div). On the 29th August 1917 the 8th amalgamated with 9th Bn to form 8th/9th Bn. The battalion was disbanded in France on the 7th Feb 1918.
