The 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Rifles was formed in 1881. at teh out break of the Great Was in August 1914 the Battalion was in Aden. They embarked for U.K.on the 27th September 1914 and arrived Liverpool on 22nd Oct. 1914, they joined 25th Bde (8th Div) at Hursley Park, Winchester. Arriving in France on the 6th November 1914 landing at Le Havre. In Feb 1918 the Battalion transfered to to 107th Bde(36th Div).
My GreatFather served with the Royal Irish Rifles, 1st Bn. He was Rifleman George Smyth, Service No. 9001. he was killed on December 30th 1914 in Flanders and was buried at Laventie Cemetery. He was born in Shankill County Antrim and enlisted in Belfast
