The Royal Irish Fusiliers was formed in 1881 as the county regiment of Armagh, Cavan and Monaghan, encompassing its Militia infantry. Two regular battalions were formed: 1st Battalion, by a redesignation of 87th (or Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Battalion, by a redesignation of 89th (The Princess Victoria's) Regiment of Foot In 1968 The Royal Irish Fusiliers joined with The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and The Royal Ulster Rifles, to form The Royal Irish Rangers
