23rd (Service) Battalion, The 4th Tyneside Scottish of the The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers was raised in 1914 in Newcastle mainly from men of Scottish decent from the North East. Initially training in Newcastle City centre the 4th Tyneside Scottish moved by train at Alnwick on the 21st April 1915. They remained in training for almost a year before travelling to France in January 1916. The 4th Tyneside Scottish saw action on the 1st of July 1916, with the 34th Division at the Battle of the Somme attacking on the north side of the Albert - Bapaume road close to the village of La Boisselle. At 7.28 am on 1st July 1916 two great mines were detonated beneath the German positions, one to the north of the village and one to the south. At 7.30 am the whistles sounded and the attack began. 16 Officers and 668 men of the 4th Tyneside Scottish were lost.
