World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar great

The 6th Field Company Canadian Engineers were one of three field corps of engineers in the 2nd Canadian Expeditionary Force. About half of the volunteers were from Queens University. They trained in Ottowa and sailed aboard the Northland from Halifax for England in Spring 1915. After further training they arrived in France in France in September 1915.

 Henry Thomas Hazelden

My Uncle. Henry Thomas Hazelden came to Canada on the RMS " Empress of Ireland" from Liverpool to St. John -- arriving April 1st 1909. He joined the Canadian Army on 26th January 1915 at Ottawa and went into the 6th. Field Company Canadian Engineers, his number 553. They boarded the " Northland" at Halifax on 24th April 1915 and sailed for England.

I have a bound book called "From the Rideau to the Rhine and back" that he must have bought. It is a day to day account of the 6th. Field Co.from Ottawa through the war in France and Belgium and back, Henry is mentioned several times in the book.

I have his original enlistment papers --discharge papers -- paybooks and awards --- there is so much, he never threw anything away ! I have attached a picture of him, he ended the war as sargent.

In his medals, he was awarded the Military Medal while L/Cpl. in 1917, also the Belgian "Croix de Guerre" by a general Officer of the Belgian Army 11th February 1919. I sent to the National Archives of Canada and received a copy of his records, I was trying to find out what he had got these awards for. All the records show is that he has them --- I have a large paper Diploma scroll for the Croix de Guerre, and a notice of the award of the Military Medal.
