Im looking for imformation regarding stalag 4G, a camp that my grandad was in for about 3 years. I understand through talking to him that it was near the town of Klinga in east Germany, but the actual whereabouts remain a bit of a mystery. About 2 years ago I travelled to Klinga with my grandad in the hope of finding this camp, but alas to no avail. My grandad says he was working in a local quarry near the camp, but as the area was surrounded by quarries it was confusing to say the least. My grandad has two photographs from this camp, taken on a home-made camera, made by one of the more enterprising prisoners. I was wondering if there are any more photos of the inside of stalag camps? Any help would be most appreciated. Andy Brown

I'm trying to write down some WWII memories of my friend's Grandad who was in Stalag XXA in Poland, and would appreciate any help in fleshing out the bones of the story with background info. I'd also love to hear from anyone who knew him at the time. He was Private Donald Martin ('Coker') Cargill of the Seaforth Highlanders TA unit, 6th batallion based at Elgin, Moray in north-east Scotland. Coker is now 84 and his family want to have a written record of his five escape attempts. He's particularly interested to know if an old friend and fellow escapee Jack (Mac) Northmore from London is still around or if anyone has any info on him?

Thanks. Mrs M. Corbett.

I am researching a story that after the war Waffen Ss prisoners of war were trained in the event of war with the then Soviet Union. Is this fact, fiction?

I'm looking for survivors of a group of British troops hiking in the mountains around Reydarfjordur, Iceland in January 1942 that got lost in a sudden winter storm. Nine soldiers perished in the ordeal and are buried in the cemetery at Reydarfjördur. Among those saved was private Fred Norton born in 1915 in Woodlands, Yorkshire. Don´t know if he´s still around.

The names of those who died: J. Platt (age. 22), J. Goldsborough (23), H. Moore (26), A. Rollinson (23), W. Gregory (22), C. Cooper (23), E. Froggatt (22) and J.E. Bradbury (21).

Would be most interested in knowing if someone has any information regarding the incident or at best, knows the whereabouts of any of the 45 survivors. They must be in their 80´s by know. I´m doing a research for a possible documentary film about the tragedy.

Kind regards, Sturla Palsson

I am doing research on my uncle, Gerald Menzies, who was part of the Calgary 14th Tank Regiment. His Canadian War Dept Number was T68560R. My uncle was part of the Deippe Raid and was captured August 19, 1942. According to what I have found, he was sent to a prison camp known as Stalag 2D somewhere in Germany where he stayed until January 1945 before embarking on the Black March. Eventually he was liberated by the Russians, and returned home to Canada just before the war in the Pacific ended. If you know of a website or any other reference regarding this camp, the city it was in, or details of their regiment, I would be most grateful.

No 3 Section, XXB, AK139
I am trying to contact anyone who knew my late father Gunner Les Hayes who was a POW at Stalag XXB and XXA from July 1940 to May 1945. The board in front of these soldiers reads "No 3 Section, XXB, AK139". Dad is second right on the back row. I have also been able to identify Herbert Pilkington, 4th left front row, and Dudley "Mick" Sealey, far left back row, by putting a request in the magazine "Yours" which has a section for old commrades.

Any info or photos of the POW camps would also be much appreciated.

I have recently bought the diaries of Lord Alanbrooke as they have been published and reading through the entries I was amazed to see one for my village (Wentworth Nr. Ely Cambridgeshire) with Alanbrooke commenting on the underground offices and other buildings. I am interested in History partiularily WW2 and would like to know more. I have surveyed the areas I could think would house such a place but to no success could you or any contacts you have help in discovering where these buildings are and what is their significance. Thank you Bart Woodbine

Can you help me find information about another camp related to the Katyn Massacre. My father was taken to this camp, similar in name to Kozielsk. It was a monastery. He was a young Polish cadet and tells a story of an exchange of prisoners between the Russians and the Germans in late October, 1939. The exchange was based on the prisoners hometown and the Curzon line.

My father was part of this exchange, but I cannot find any mention of it.

Thank you, Susan Gray

My granfather, Robert Proctor, served in world war two as a bren gun carrier driver. His unit badge was a white leaping boar on a black backgroung. I'm trying to find out what this unit was called, and possibly some history of action. As a note, he was once part of a British armoured unit but I was told he was attached to a Canadian unit when he landed at normandy a few days after D-day.

I would really apreciate any help on this story as well, and the reason for his secondment. My grand father died in March 1999. Thank you very much, Ste Holdsworth

I am trying to find out some information on a B24 crash that we have found the wreckage of.

The aircraft is #42-78213 and belonged to the 15th USAAF, 454th BG, 736 BS. and the Target : Montpellier/Frejorgues. GAF'airdrome.

Of the 10 men aboard : 2 KIA (bodies recovered at sea) 4 still reported missing and 4 Pow's.

We are trying to find out as much about this aircraft so we can pass on the information to the US Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii at Hickam Field with the view to excavation and recovery of any possible crew remains on board. Any information would be most helpful to assist us in our mission.

Check out our web site at http://www.divetheworld.com and click on the UW Warbirds section to see the photos. Any information we can get would make our operation and mission easier and safer as the aircraft lies at 55 meters off the coast off the South of France and is at a very "tricky" depth.

Our father told us that he was in the armed forces as some sort of secret agent. He was a scientist and after the war worked for the MOD in RAE Farnborough on guided weapons. He has just died and we have found what looks like a military ID tag in his effects. We would like to find out more any ideas?

This is my Grandfather, David Arthur Gibbs. (B 1909) I have his Regular Army certificate of Service. His army number is 788384 He enlisted at Middlesborough on the 22-11-28 - Royal Artillery. Gunner.

It shows he served BEF 14-1-40 to 15-6-40 Middle East 8-1-42 to 5-6-42. He was in Italian P.O.W camp from 6-6-42 to 9-5-45. Does anyone recognise his cap badge, I know it is not clear, but it does not resemble the royal artillery badges I have seen. It looks more like it is a bird of some description. Does anyone know branch of artillery this is? All I know he was a batman / groom - but no-one can remember who to! Any information would be gratefully received.

Beverly Smith

My Grandfather (William Robertson) talks of a 22 day voyage on a merchant ship called The Magpie. He recalls that it took an old route across the Azzures and up the coast of the US. He also remembers an officer called _Blood, who he referred to as 'Captain Blood'. _Blood told him that this route was last travelled by Christopher Columbus (a joke I assume).

The Magpie was apparently a ship that had served (again as a merchant ship) in WW1 as the Belamina (BellaMina) and had been docked on Americas Great Lakes before returning to service in WW2. My Grandfather was in the engine rooms stoking coal.

I am interested in any information on either the ship during the time it was back in service in WW2 or what has happened to it since. Also any information on it time before WW2 would be received with thanks.

Stephen Connell

I was a prisoner of W.W.II, taken during the battle of the bulge on December 24th. I remember being interned at Stalag 2-B and 2-A being marched back and forth across Germany to keep from being freed by the advancing armies. What I'm trying to remember is at which of these two camps was the last one that I was at. We were freed by the British on April 28 1945. The other thing I remember was the camp was near the city where Red Cross parcels were distributed from but I don't remember what city. Can anybody help me on this? I'm 77 years old now and have been writing the story of my life. Any help would be appreciated.

Robert R. Lanz

I am in the US Army currently stationed in Germany. I am interested in any organisations that are trying to preserve battlefields in this country. My main area of interest is the Huertgen Forrest. I have visited it twice and I am truly amazed at what I have seen. The foxholes, bomb craters and even pieces of equipment that are left is unbelievable. It is truly amazing. The thing that upsets me is that the local citizens are currently logging the land heavily and destroying what is left of a historic site. I have seen this all over Europe, not just in the Huertgen, and it upsets me. I know that people have to reclaim the land but I also believe that some of it should be set aside, so that future generations can see what it was like and actually walk the land that the battles took place on for a better understanding of what really happened. The German government and it's people destroy a lot of their national battlefields. I don't know why, but I can only guess that maybe they don't want to be reminded of what their ancestors did, but I feel that if we erase all memory of it, then we have learned nothing, and the deaths of many men on both sides would have been for nothing. As a soldier, I deeply respect and admire the men who fought in W.W.I and W.W.II, and I realise the sacrifices they made for not just our country, but for the world. I think that we should be able to honour them with something more then a couple of cemeteries. The battlefields will serve as a valuable teaching tool. If you have knowledge of any organisations, dedicated to preserving what is left of Europe's great battlefields could you please send the information. I am interested in doing what I can to aid their cause.

Thank you, SSG Ronald Ratliff

I wonder if anyone knows anything about the Balloon Squadron, Waterborne division stationed in Liverpool from about 1940 to the end of the war. My father Joseph Riley was in this squadron during the war and although I have details of his service it does not mention anything about what the waterborne division did. I have pictures of him on a small boat and also standing by a large balloon in a field. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful.

Pat Hancocks

I am trying to find out more about the crash of Wellington T2905 that took off from RAF Bassingbourne and crashed in St Andrews Park, Bristol on 30th April 1941 after colliding with barrage balloon cables. The crew on board were from 11 OTU and were:-

Captain 61048 Kenneth Guy Evans (Pilot Officer), Sgt 979838 Thomas Leonard Lever (Wireless operator/Air gunner), Sgt 744913 Charles John Clarke (Wireless operator/Air gunner) - my grandfather, Sgt 964956 L.H. Houghton (2nd Pilot), Sgt 741779 J.S. Jones (crew), Sgt 1376456 R. Wish (crew)

Tragically Kenneth Evans, Thomas Lever and Charles Clarke died in the crash. The other three men survived. I would like to contact the families of any of these men, anyone who served with them, anyone from 951 Balloon Squadron who served in Bristol in early 1941 or anyone who knows anything about this aircraft, its crew or the crash. I have information to share as well.

John Clarke

I am trying to find out if my uncle is buried in the cemetery in St. Valery en Caux, France. My dad seems to think this was where he died, although no one has ever seen the grave. He was a member of the 2nd Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps and apparently was shot by a sniper whilst attending to an injured soldier. Name: Arthur James Wignell Searjent, 7259463 Killed, Wednesday June 12th, 1940 at age 31 If anyone has any information about him, his life in the RAMC or any other interesting stuff, I'd love to hear from you. I am hoping to get to France next year, and try to search for his gravesite.

Thanks Pat Tyrrell

Update: The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site states that Sgt Wignell has no known grave and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial along with 4,000 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who fell in the campaign of 1939-1940 and who have no known grave.

I am currently researching the history of the numerous W.W.II airfields in North Norfolk. Could anyone tell me where I could find information on the Egmere airfield during the war. I have visited various websites but cannot find it mentioned anywhere. If anyone either knows where I could find some relevant material, or if anyone has any knowledge of the aircraft flown from there or any related stories, I would very appreciative.

Thanks for any help

Ryan Fowle

Update: I have since found out from a relative that this airfield was used as a dummy airfield, as it was close to the coast. Occasionally squadrons would inhabit it and fly from there, but it was not used as a full time base. Can anyone add any more information?

We have for some time now been searching for my Father's Father. He was the product of a wartime romance between his Mother May Moore who served in the WAAF and a certain American/Canadian serviceman who is thought to have been part of the 401 bomb squadron based at Bourne near Cambridge. This chappie is thought to have been in this country around 1943 and was a Master Staff Sergeant named Joseph either Chevara or Chevereaux (we are not absolutely sure of the spelling)! If anybody can help us in our quest or point us in the right direction we would be grateful. Thank you

Richard Moore

I am researching for a film about a TA Ox and Bucks LI 4th Battalion Private, and desperately need some photographs of a prisoner of war camp. He was in Teschen Stalag 13b for some of his time as a POW. Can you help? Also, general pictures of camp life, Red Cross parcels arriving, even a picture of a censored letter. All this ASAP! Any suggestions for sources? The Regimental Museum has none.

Debra Rixon

If you have any of the above items, The Wartime Memories Project would also be interested in copies for the Prisoner Of War feature, please get in touch.

I know this is a long shot but I find that as I grow older,( I've just turned 50 ) I really would love to know more about my late father, Richard Craig. He was a Royal Marine and there seem to be two numbers: P.O.X. 104108 and P.O.X 5713. In 1945 he lived at Manor Road, East Finchley and in 1951 Deerhurst Crescent, Paulsgrove,Portsmouth.

We came out to SA in 1955 although he went back in 1978 and passed away in 1979. So much of our lives is a mystery and I would be so grateful if anyone could help me fill in the gaps.

I would like to find out if anyone knew my uncle from Thornaby on Tees, who was killed in Action on Wednesday 28th May 1941. He was Gunner Ralph Higginbotham Hamilton, 7th Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery. The story in the family of how he was killed was that he was wounded in either North Africa, or Italy, and was being transported on a Hospital ship, when it was bombed, and sunk.

My uncle Ralph has no known grave, and Ralph`s Mother (my Grandmother)always refused to believe he was dead. However after my Grandmothers death in 1980, I approached Stockton on Tees Council and arranged to have his name inscribed on Thornaby on Tees's Cenotaph. I was looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site a few months ago, and I keyed in my uncles name and Regiment, not expecting to find anything, and I was very surprised to learn that he is commemorated on the Athens War Memorial in Greece. This shows that the information about his death that the family were given was wrong, because the memorial is dedicated to the men who were killed in the defence of Greece and Crete in 1941.

It would be interesting to learn just where he was serving, when he was killed. I would be very grateful to anyone who could offer me more information.

Thank you very much. Ray Todd

My Higher Drama class are currently doing a piece on World War Two, and we were wondering if you would have any examples of conscription letters that would be sent to young men telling them to join the army, or be able to give us an idea of what the letters might have said? Any help you would be able to give us would be gratefully appreciated.

Could you direct me to any sites that give information on Lancaster production at Woodford airstip in Poynton Cheshire and the American base situated around the same site during WW2?

I am researching the Waffen-SS and in particular their treatment of Allied prisoners of war. The experiences of survivors range from witnessing murder through to praise for the humanitarian manner in which their SS captors treated them. All of this serves to make the Waffen-SS rather enigmatic.

To ensure a balanced view, however, I am also interested in the treatment that Waffen-SS soldiers received from Allied combat units Dilip Sarkar

Fred Forrest
My uncle Fred Forrest was an observer on a Halifax that was shot down over Zuhlen, Germany on January 29, 1944. He was with 419 sqdn. I am looking for further information regarding his time overseas. Can you point me in any direction?

He is buried in the Berlin 1939 - 1945 War Cemetery. My aunt has told my mother that his grave was recently moved to another cemetery. Would you happen to know if the cemetery I have mentioned above is the same goes by a different name, or has some of the graves been moved to another place? I think that my aunt perhaps has been mixed up as I do believe that Fred Forrest was reburied from the spot where he was first interred. Do you know? Marny Forrest

I am trying to trace the names of British merchant men ships on PQ12/13 for my father who served on PQ12 as a merchant man.

In the front cover he has written GNR GIBBS D.A - POW No: 125186 Stalag VII A 1944. Also it is stamped Stalag XXA Gepruit 29. Can anyone tell me by these stamps where he was during the war, and is there

anyway I can find out more of his time in the army with just a prisoner of war number.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

I am researching HMS Birnbeck during WW2, which was actually Birnbeck Pier at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset and was used by the Admiralty for weapons research and trials. Department of Miscellaneous Weapons Development (DMWD) had many exploits and much was written in "The Secret War 1939-45" by Gerald Pawle, but did YOU serve there around 1942 and 1943. My late father did, his name was Leading Seaman (Gunner) Herbert Capon, and one other person that we know but can't trace is "Johnno" Johnson. Do you have any recollections or memories of HMS Birnbeck - even if only from a Weston inhabitant.

Thanks

Janet Capon-Brown

I would really like to get some information on the trip across the Atlantic but every door closes on that. It was on RMS. Cameronia in September 1940 from Glasgow to New York, with a Naval escort and a boat load of Jewish refugees from the continent

Maurice Roy Skeet
I am researching my father's service life, Maurice "Roy" Skeet (39800) RAF Bomber Command and trying to contact anyone who might have served with 77 Sqn,70 Sqn and 216 Sqn in the Middle East or the "Communications Flight" Station Habbaniya, Iraq between the dates 8th April 1938 and late 1941.

I would welcome any communication regarding the activities of these units during that period, and if possible anyone who knew or knew of M.R. Skeet who was Flight Lieutenantt Officer Commanding the Communications Flight at Habbaniya during 1941.

Communications Flight Habbaniya sometime in late 1940 or early 1941. Maurice Roy Skeet (circled)
I am told the above photo was taken at Habbaniya sometime in late 1940 or early 194. If anyone can recognise the other individuals to my dad who is ringed as Officer Commanding I would be very interested.
Do you know anyone in this group? Maurice Roy Skeet (circled)
I would be most interested if anyone could identify the locations and perhaps any of the other individuals in these two groups
Where was this photo taken?. Maurice Roy Skeet (circled)

The three individuals outlined in rectangles are the hand-written names on the back of the picture. Dad is outlined in the circle.

Thanking you. Lesley St.Clair

I am currently writing a book about my upbringing from 1940 onwards and would like to contact anyone who knew my father corporal William James Alfred Marsh of 6 Commando. Particularly anyone who served in no 1 brigade from D-day onwards.

My father never spoke about his wartime experiences and sadly died in 1985. Anything I can get that will do him and his comrades credit I will welcome with open arms and use with pride in my book.

I was just wondering if you could help me. I am looking for a poster that was produced following the attack on Pearl Harbor. It reads- "Avenge December 7th" and has a picture of a man raising his fist towards the person viewing the poster. I hope that you can point me to where I can find it.

I am interested in any infomation about the war ship Lightning which was sunk in the second world war by an Italian U-boat I would be very greatfull if you could direct me to any Internet sites regarding this fleet which show pictures. Yours truly Adrian Hussain.

Air-raids on and around Middlesbrough? I bought an old history book, inside was a letter from WW2, it said," 19 Cotswold Gdns, Sunday.

My dear Winnie,

Dad has just finished your letter so I haven't any news. I got this parcel ready today so as Jim can post it in the morning. I am starting spring cleaning & Margaret is coming tomorrow Monday to help me. I want to try & be finished before you come home. I did your little room on Friday, I think it looks lovely. I distempered it all a little deeper colour. Do you want your sweet ration coupons back or shall I keep them till you come. We had two bad raids on Thursday & Friday night. I expect you would also have them. It is two years yesterday since the big blitz on Glasgow by the date. I hope you are well. I haven't much jam, but there's almost 1 lb in that tin.

Lots of love, Mum "

Inside the book was a label AYTON SCHOOL Winifred Matthews Form 2a

Please does anyone know:- When or where the raids might have been? Where Cotswold Gardens was? Anything about Winnie and did she like her newly decorated room? David G Butters of Billingham

Update: I am now fairly sure that the letter was posted in mid March 1943 as I found out that the Glasgow raids were on 13th & 14th March 1941 and there were raids on Grangetown on 12th & 13th March 1943 - exactly 2 years later as Winnie's Mamm mentioned.

Ayton school is trying to help me by contacting old students who may have known Winnie - all they could tell me from their records was that she was there from 1942-44.

Winnie can not hide forever - I want to find her - she might want her letter and book back!

She might have some stories to tell about the life of a schoolgirl in the 1940's.

I think that she would have been born in 1930 or 1931 so she might still be alive and well - if not she might have children

I'm Head of the History Department at Eastbourne School in Darlington and we're just about ready to start putting together a research project on Darlington during the war.

I'm looking for my grandfather who was in World War 2. I don`t know much about him. When my father was born he left. My father never got to meet him.

I know his name was John V Zweck and he had a child with my Grandmom Edith Bell who is deceased so I never got to meet her to find out about my grandfather.

I`m hoping some one might know him and be able to tell me about him. Some people say he was missing in action and some say he was killed or went AWOL I`m not sure.

If any one can help find this missing grandfather It would really help his granddaughter out that he never knew or if he has family some where out there.

Thank you

Gina BURNHAM
