World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
The 821st Tank Destroyer Battalion saw action in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. Code named "ATHIRST " the 821st were activated on the 25th of July 1942 at Camp Carson, Colorado. they sailed on the 6th of April 1944, from New York arriving in the UK on the 17th.
On the 26th of June 1944 the 821st landed on Omaha Beach in France, reaching Holland in September and Germany in November. They returned to the States on the 16th of Feb 1946 arriving at New York.
I am a great nephew of Technician Fifth Grade Least Jacobsen, Headquarters Company 821st Tank Destroyer Battalion. Stationed in England during WW2 and died in June of 1944 on Fathers Day. I've just found out how he died by contacting my Congressman through the War Department and receiving his full military file that was still available. I would like to know if there is anyone still alive who may have known my uncle. He died before I was born. For many years not really knowing the true facts of his short military life and then his sudden death was a mystery. His two brothers went to war and came home alive. My grand parents and my two uncles would never talk about him. Any kind of information that you may know of and where I can find any remaining servicemen of that era, please pass it along. Mark Norman
