Information.

1st Infantry Division. The Big Red One was made up of:

  • 16th Infantry Regiment
  • 18th Infantry Regiment
  • 26th Infantry Regiment
  • 1st Reconnaissance Troop
  • 1st Engineer Combat Battalion
  • 1st Medical Battalion
  • 5th Field Artillery Battalion
  • 7th Field Artillery Battalion
  • 32nd Field Artillery Battalion
  • 33rd Field Artillery Battalion
  • 701st Ordinance Company
  • 1st Quartermaster Company
  • 1st Signal Company
  • 1st Infantry Division Hq Company
  • 1st Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized)
  • 1st MP Platoon
  • 1st Divisional Band

Other units were also attached to the 1st Division.





My uncle, Pvt. Thurston Clay Halcomb, served with the Big Red One, going in as a casualty replacement. He was in every major battle of the European Theatre, missing only the invasion of Africa. He has the Bronze Star and seven battle stars on his ETO ribbon. He still has his uniform and can almost button it!
