World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

104th Infantry Division, nicknamed "Timberwolf" from the division's insignia, was activated in 1942, they landed in France in September 1944, and quickly advanced into Belgium by the end of the following month. They took part in the battles at Aachen and Cologne and in the Rhur Valley. They advanced into central Germany and met up with Soviet forces in late April 1945.

The 104th overran Nordhausen and the Dora-Mittlebau concentration camp on April 11, 1945 where they discovered 3,000 corpses lying around the camp and some 750 emaciated, starving, and ill prisoners who had been left behind when the SS evacuated the inmates on death marches.

The 104th Infantry Division suffered over 6000 casualties in the European theater of operations.

My father, S/Sgt. John "Jack" Znavor was in 414th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company F. He served in 1943-45.

My Dad, Alfred "Fred" Despault, was in the 104th infantry division and was captured on 11/13/1944. He escaped and was repatraited on 7/30/1945. He never liked to talk about what happened. I'm trying to find out anything about his war years.

R Despault
