World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

No. 97 Squadron, RFC, was formed at Waddington, Lincolnshire, on 1st December 1917. During the Second World War, 97 Squadron were part of Bomber Command and flew 4,091 operational sorties with the loss of 130 aircraft.

97 Squadron was disbanded in 1967.


Airfields at which 97 Squadron were based:
  • Leconfield. 3 Sept 1939 to 17 Sep 1939
  • Abingdon 17 Sep 1939 (as No.10 OTU) to 8th April 1940.
  • Driffield 1st May 40 to 20th May 1940 (disbanded)
  • Waddington. 25 Feb 1941 (reformed) to 10 Mar 1941
  • Coningsby. 10 Mar 1941 to 2nd Mar 1942 and from 18 April 1944 onwards
  • Woodhall Spa. 2nd Mar 1942 to 18th Apr 1943.
  • Bourn. 18th Apr 1943.to 18th Apr 1944


Air Gunners in Training.

My uncle William (Billy) Parsley, was a air gunner with the 97 R.A.F. Squadron. He was killed along with the whole crew of their Lancaster JB299 OF-W, on 21st January 1944, all are buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery.
