Information.

No. 82 Squadron was first formed in 1917 and served as an army co-operation unit on the Western Front flying Armstrong Whitworth FK8 aircraft. Disbanded in 1919. The Squadron was re-formed as a bomber unit in 1937 flying Blenheims with No. 2 Group.

In June 1942, 82 Squadron moved to the Far East and were re-equipped with Vengeance dive-bombers in August taking on the duty of Anti-submarine patrols and from June 1943 bombing raids began against Japanese targets in Burma. In 1943 82 Squadron were re-equipped with Mosquitoes.

82 Squadron was disbanded on 15 March 1946. Post war the squadron was reformed.

Airfields at which No.82 Squadron were based:

  • Watton. 1939 to 1st Oct 1940
  • Bodney. 1st Oct 1940 to 18 Apr 1941 & 3 May 1941 to 30 Jun 1942
  • Lossiemouth. 18 Apr 1941 to 3 May 1941 Detached to Coastal Command
  • Luqa Malta. June 1941 Detached to Mediterranean
  • Far East. from June 1942


My cousin Sargeant William Watson Fox, 82 Squadron killed in action 4th April 1941 (age 19) flying from Watton, Would like to hear from anyone that could shed light on his service record. He was was reported killed in action along with the rest of his crew when Blenheim IV serial L9270 code UX-X from 82 Squadron took off at 1250 on the 4th April 1941 from RAF Bodney on Anti Shipping operations and was reported lost with out trace. The other members of the crew who were also reported killed in action were Sergeant Albert Victor Message Farns and Sergeant Norman Augustus Geer
