World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

No. 613 (City of Manchester) Squadron was formed at Ringway on 1 March 1939 as an Auxiliary Air Force army co-operation unit equipped with Hawker Hinds. They later flew Hectors and Lysanders before re-equipping with American built Curtis Tomahawk aircraft in the Army co-operation role. They also flew Mosquito fighter-bombers specialising in precision daylight attacks, and famously bombed the Gestapo HQ in The Hague.

No. 613 Squadron was renumbered No. 69 Squadron on the 8th August 1945.

Airfields at which No. 613 Squadron were based:

  • Ringway
  • Firbeck
  • Doncaster
  • Lasham
  • RAF Wellingore. Apr to May 1943
  • Cambrai

I wonder if anyone can help me - my father, Guy Overton, is 84 years old and trying to trace aircrew who flew with his brother, Jack Overton. Jack Overton was a Flight Lieutenant who served in 613 Squadron flying Mosquitos. He had received the Croix de Guerre and the DFC and was killed in a car crash on 30 November 1944 near Cambrai in France.

The aircrew who we are trying to trace are Ft Lieut Simon Sitwell, Ft Lieut Jock Horne and Navigator Lofty Eyles. Ideally my father would like to know if any of these three are alive and if they are where they live and whether it would be possible to speak with them. However, needless to say if anyone had any knowledge of these three gentlemen it would be much appreciated. With many thanks to anyone who may be able to assist.
