My grandfather, Stanley C Alldis was in 57 Squadron in the RAF during WW2. On the 11th Nov 1944, 57 Sqn, Avro Lancaster I, Serial No. LL939, Code DX-H, took off 16:54 East Kirkby on operations to Hamburg. The aircraft was hit by flak and crash-landed circa 19:27 near Beckdorf, 8 km SSW from Buxtehude. On the first impact one engine and the rear turret were torn away, the rest of the Lancaster bouncing back into the air and flying on for over a km before smashing back to earth. The two survivors are believed to have baled out, as did Sgt Brett but his parachute failed to deploy. He lies in Becklingen War Cemetery, while the others who died are buried in Hamburg Cemetery, Ohlsdorf.
I have an undying admiration for him and his peers, especially those that lost their lives in this tragedy. I also want to show my respect by joining in with any events that the RAF have to commemorate crewmembers that were a part of Bomber Command during WW2.
- F/O S Bowden (killed)
- Sgt AC Brett (killed)
- Sgt LW Nagley (pow)
- F/S SC Alldis (pow)
- Sgt JA McLaughlin (killed)
- F/S FC Green (killed)
- Sgt C Batford (killed)
I am one of 3 sons of Hugh Welland who served with 57sqd in 1943. I wanted to know if any other survivors are still around?
