World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
The Royal Regiment of Canada was formed in 1938 by the amalgamation of The Royal Grenadiers and the Toronto Regiment. On 10 June 1940 the regiment left Halifax for Iceland to defend against a possible German invasion. A 2nd Battalion was formed in Toronto in July. The regiment arrived in England on the 3rd of November 1940. The regiment took part in the landings at Dieppe in August 1942, they sailed from Portsmouth abourd the Queen Emma and the Princess Astrid, landing on Puys (Blue) beach over 500 men were killed or taken prisoner. They also saw action across Western Europe after the D-Day Landings.
My father, Pte. Philip Matthew Ward, a medic, with the Royal Regiment of Canada, was captured at Dieppe and interned in a prisoner of war camp. He also participated in the death march. He died in Sept. of 1982 and wouldn't, like most men who survived the war, talk about it. Tonight, I found his old prisoners "dog-tags".
