World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
RAF West Rayhnam was situated ive miles south-west of Fakerham and two miles west of West Raynham village.in Norfolk. The base was built as part of the airfields expansion scheme in 1938-9.
West Raynham was home to No. 2 Group, with No. 101 Squadron flying Blenheims arriving from Bicester in May 1939. In April No. 76 Squadron was reformed with the prospect of becoming a second operational Blenheim unit but the crisis in France brought about a hasty disbandment after only three weeks. No 18 Sqd arrived 12th June 1940 leaving for Great Massingham on the 8th September 1940 On the 15th May 1941 90 Sqd. arrived, remaining until the 28th June when they moved to RAF Polebrook. No 18 Sqd returned to West Raynham on the 23rd August 1942 flying Blenheim V, they left for the Middle East, in November 42.
West Raynham was finally closed for flying in 1975, becoming a base for Bloodhound missiles. The station closed in closed in July 1994 and is now used as a motor circuit.
