World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
USAAF Tibenham, situated 13 miles SW of Norwich, opened in November 1942 and became home the 320th Bomb Group for a short time en-route to North Africa. The airfield was then used by 2nd Bomb Wing for training. The 445th BG flew B-24 Liberators between November 1943 and May 1945, flying 282 combat missions, losing over 100 aircraft. On the 27th of Spetember 1944, 28 B-24s were lost out of 37 who took off from Tibenham, the Eighth Airforce's highest day's loss from a single BG.
After the war the airfield was handed back to the RAF. The Airfield closed 1959 and was sold in 1964. Today the site is used for gliding.
