World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
Information.
Before 1939 Ronaldsway was the main civil aerodrome on the Isle of Man, in 1940 the site was requisitioned as RAF Ronaldsway. The base was used for ground to air gunnery training.
In 1943, the aerodrome was handed over to the Fleet Air Arm continuing as a training restablishment. The base was renamed "HMS Urley" (Manx Gaelic for Eagle) and facilities were expanded to accomodate 2,000 personnel, training to become Torpedo Bomber crews. The Fairey Barracuda was teh main training aircraft used and many accidents occured.
Civilian aviation continued through out the war alongside the military activities. In 1946 the airfield fully reverted to its civilian role which continues to this day.
The Manx Aviation and Military Museum opened on the site in Novemember 2000, housed in the Fleet Air Arm buildings.
