World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

RAF Polebrook opened in 1941. From June 1921 to Feb. 1942 it was home to 90 Sqn who under took test flights of B-17s. In May 1942 the USAAF 97th BG arrived with B-17s, flying the first 8th Air Force heavy bomber mission to Rouen marshalling yards on 17th Aug 1942. In Oct 49 they moved to N. Africa. Rolebrook was also home to the 351st Bomb Group with B-17s. They flew 311 missions between 15/4/43 and 7/45.

Major Clark Gable filmed the documentary 'Combat America' at Polebrook betweem July and September 1943. After the Americans left in October 1945 273 MU and 3 Ferry Pool RAF used the airfield. until it closed in October 1948. Polebrook saw service again between December 1559 and August 1963 as Thor missile.

Today the site is used for agriculture
