Information. RAF Metheringham opened as a bomber airfield within 5 Group in October 1943 home to 106 sqd, which arrived with its Lancasters from Syerston. Metheringham was one of the few airfields chosen to be equipped with the FIDO fog dispersal system. The airfield closed in 1946. Today the buildings in a state of decay. The visitor centre is well worth a visit, as are the deserted runways and memorial Squadrons stationed at Metheringham during the Second World War: from 11 Nov 1943 My uncle F/Sgt Robert Hudson McLean 426666 RAAF was based at Metheringam with Lancaster Sqdn 106, Bomber Group 5 until he and most of his crew were killed in a raid over Konigsberg August 29/30 1944.
