Information.

No. 34 SERVICE FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL was established at Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Opening on the 26th of Feb. 1941 for the training of pilots in both single and twin engine aircraft. The aircraft used in training inclused Avro Ansons, Oxfords and Harvards.

Over 2000 airmen were trained at Medicine Hat, 48 airmen lost their lives whilst flying from this school. Most are buried at the Hillside Cemetery close to the base.

The school closed on the 17th Nov. 1944. Today the site is Medicine Hat Airport.

My Dad, Ron Arlett, served at Medicine Hat. He was a wonderful Dad - he and my Mum were married in Medicine Hat on October 31, 1942.

ARLETT, F/L Ronald (RAF 63851) - Member, Order of the British Empire - No.34 Service Flying Training School, Medicine Hat, Alberta - Award effective 28 May 1943 as per London Gazette dated 2 June 1943 and AFRO 1459/43 dated 30 July 1943.

An Armament Officer at this school for the past two years, Flight Lieutenant Arlett has displayed considerable initiative and ability in organizing the Armament training, both in the Ground School and in the air, as well as Synthetic training devices. Through his able lecturing abilities he is able to instil in the minds of the pupils a clear conception of what will be required of them in actual operations. His outstanding ability in his special duties has enhanced considerably the efficiency of the output of pupils in Armament training.
