World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

Opened as Cranwell RLG with 253 Sqn Hurricanes and 264 Sqn Defiants in April 1940. The station was transferred to 12 Group Fighter Command as satellite to Digby with Hurricane 1s of 402 Sqn in May 1941. The Beaufighters of 409 Sqn RCAF were based at Coleby Grange from July 1941

Mosquito MkIIs of 410 Sqn RCAF were based here from Feb 43 to October 43 on nightfighter defence duties and 'Ranger' ops with single Mosquitoes attacking specific European road and rail targets at night. 307 (Polish) Sqn were also based here with Mosquito XII, leaving in May 1945 when the based closed.

1959 saw the station re-opened with 142 Sqn Thor ICBM unit closing again in 1963.

Today the airfield is in private hands and used for agriculture.
