World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

RAF Carew Cheriton near Tenby in Pembrokeshire was first used during the First World War as a Royal Naval Air Station. During World War Two the site was rebuilt as a Coastal Command Station.

During the evening of 15th July 1940, bombs were dropped near RAF Carew Cheriton.

The airfield was handed over to Technical Training Command in 1942 and became home to No. 10 Radio School

Today some of the runways and buildings remain, there is a museum on site.

Squadrons stationed at RAF Carew Cheriton

  • No. 1 AACU
  • 75 Squadron
  • No: 254 Squadron. May to Dec 1941
  • No: 248 Squadron. June 1941 to March 1942
  • No: 22 Squadron. March to April 1940

Im'm trying to track down a Anthony Leon Victor Barnes. He was a Pilot Officer serving with No 1 Anti Aircraft Co-operation Unit'B' flight at RAF Carew Cheriton near Tenby, Wales. He was killed when his aircraft crashed shortly after take off on 23rd April 1940 and is buried in Carew Cheriton cemetary.

His grave is one of fifteen war graves there. There has been contact made with the relatives of the other fourteen men and a photo of each one has been given so they can be properly remembered locally. A name on a headstone means little but the face of a young man staring at you from a photo really hits home.

The only information I have so far is that his death certificate shows his home address as being "Wickstead", Blackdown, Leamington. This address has apparently been demolished. The last known address of his next of kin was 94 Gillhurst Road, Harbourne, Birmingham but the family moved from this address in the early 1950's and no further trace could be found.

I know it's asking a lot but if anybody has any information no matter how vague that could help I'ld be extremely grateful.

Karen Scourfield
