World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Information.

RAF Bardney was a Bomber command station in Lincolnshire, opening in 1943.

Bardney was home to No: 9 Squadron

The airfield was used after the war as a missile site, closing in 1963. Later for the site was used for gliding and private flying. Many of the wartime buildings are now used for agricultural stores

The control tower and a good part of the runway/taxi ways are still in place the area is used by a chemical company so access is restricted.

My Uncle Joseph Hambly was a rear gunner based at Bardney and flew 30 missions with No. 9 Sqd before being killed over Holland on Sept 24th 1944. He was involved in the raid on the Tirpitz which flew from Archangel in Russia and had two kills confirmed. I have my uncle's log book a number of photographs and the story of the crews last mission told by the only surviving member.

Gary Hambly
