Information. Atcham was a 9 Group Fighter Command Station operating Spitfires up to mid 1942. Home to the following squadrons: 74 Sqn, 131 Sqn, 232 Sqn and 350 Sqn. On the 15th June 1942 the site was transferred to USAAF and became home to the 31st Fighter Group, in August they moved to Westhampnett. The station was taken over by 14th FG with P-38s, moving to North Africa in November. from November 1942 to October 1943 Atcham was host to 6th Fighter Wing, as a Combat Crew Replacement Centre, they flew Spitfires and Airacobras, these being replaced with P-47s. In October 1943 6th Fighter Wing was renamed 2906th Observation Training Group, then renamed again as 495th Fighter Training Group. They stayed until Febuary 1945, moveing to Cheddington.. From August 1944 the Ninth AF P-38s from Goxhill used the site. The station returned to RAF control on the 14th March 1945 becoming satellite of Ternhill for No 5 (Pilot) Advanced Flying Unit and No 6 Service Flying Training School and 577 Sqn who engaged in target towing with Oxfords, Spitfires and Vengeances. The airfield was sold 20th Jan 1958. Today the site has returned to farmland, some of the buildings survive and are used as an industrial estate.
